rmap_walk_anon() and try_to_unmap_anon() appears to be too
careful about locking the anon vma: while it needs protection
against anon vma list modifications, it does not need exclusive
access to the list itself.
Transforming this exclusive lock to a read-locked rwsem removes
a global lock from the hot path of page-migration intense
threaded workloads which can cause pathological performance like
this:

With this change applied the profile is now nicely flat
and there's no anon-vma related scheduling/blocking.
Rename anon_vma_[un]lock() => anon_vma_[un]lock_write(),
to make it clearer that it's an exclusive write-lock in
that case - suggested by Rik van Riel.

Reuse the NUMA code's 'modified page protections' count that
change_protection() computes and skip the TLB flush if there's
no changes to a range that sys_mprotect() modifies.
Given that mprotect() already optimizes the same-flags case
I expected this optimization to dominantly trigger on
CONFIG_NUMA_BALANCING=y kernels - but even with that feature
disabled it triggers rather often.
There's two reasons for that:
1)
While sys_mprotect() already optimizes the same-flag case:
if (newflags == oldflags) {
*pprev = vma;
return 0;
}
and this test works in many cases, but it is too sharp in some
others, where it differentiates between protection values that the
underlying PTE format makes no distinction about, such as
PROT_EXEC == PROT_READ on x86.
2)
Even where the pte format over vma flag changes necessiates a
modification of the pagetables, there might be no pagetables
yet to modify: they might not be instantiated yet.
During a regular desktop bootup this optimization hits a couple
of hundred times. During a Java test I measured thousands of
hits.
So this optimization improves sys_mprotect() in general, not just
CONFIG_NUMA_BALANCING=y kernels.
[ We could further increase the efficiency of this optimization if
change_pte_range() and change_huge_pmd() was a bit smarter about
recognizing exact-same-value protection masks - when the hardware
can do that safely. This would probably further speed up mprotect(). ]

" The major features of this series are:
1. A first version of no-callbacks CPUs. This version prohibits

Relaxing this constraint is in progress, but not yet ready
for prime time. These commits were posted to LKML at

Note that the commit eliminating __stop_machine() was judged to

There's another source of overhead in the perf version string generator:
git update-index -q --refresh
... which will iterate the whole checked out tree. This can be pretty
slow on NFS volumes, but takes some time even with local SSD disks and a
fully cached kernel tree:
$ perf stat --null --repeat 3 --pre "rm -f PERF-VERSION-FILE" util/PERF-VERSION-GEN
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.g5399b3b.dirty
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.g5399b3b.dirty
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.g5399b3b.dirty
Performance counter stats for 'util/PERF-VERSION-GEN' (3 runs):
0.306999221 seconds time elapsed ( +- 0.56% )
So remove the .dirty differentiator as well - it adds little information
because locally patched git trees are common, but seldom are the perf
tools modified.
So a lot of version strings are reported as 'dirty' while in fact they
are pristine perf builds. For example 99% of my perf builds are not
patched but the kernel tree is slightly patched, which adds the .dirty
tag.
Eliminating that tag speeds up version generation by another order of
magnitude:
$ perf stat --null --repeat 3 --sync --pre "rm -f PERF-VERSION-FILE" util/PERF-VERSION-GEN
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.g4b0bd3

Building perf is pretty slow on trees that have a lot of commits
relative to the nearest Git tag. This slowness manifests itself during
version string generation:
$ perf stat --null --repeat 3 --sync --pre "rm -f PERF-VERSION-FILE" util/PERF-VERSION-GEN
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.1458.g5399b3b
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.1458.g5399b3b
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.1458.g5399b3b
Performance counter stats for 'util/PERF-VERSION-GEN' (3 runs):
2.857503976 seconds time elapsed ( +- 0.22% )
The build can be even slower than that, when one over NFS volumes.
The reason for the slowness is that util/PERF-VERSION-GEN uses "git
describe" to generate the string, which has to count the "number of
commits distance" from the nearest tag - the ".1458." count in the
output above. For that Git had to extract and decompress 1458 Git
objects, which takes time and bandwidth.
But this "number of commits" value is mostly irrelevant in practice. We
either want to know an approximate tag name, or we want to know the
precise sha1.
So this patch simplifies the version string to:
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.g5399b3b.dirty
which speeds up the version string generation script by an order of
magnitude:
$ perf stat --null --repeat 3 --sync --pre "rm -f PERF-VERSION-FILE" util/PERF-VERSION-GEN
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.g5399b3b.dirty
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.g5399b3b.dirty
PERF_VERSION = 3.7.rc3.g5399b3b.dirty

0. A fix for a latent bug that has been in RCU ever since the

Steve Rostedt asked for the merge of a single commit, into both
the RCU and the perf/tracing tree:
| Josh made a change to the tracing code that affects both the
| work Paul McKenney and I are currently doing. At the last
| Kernel Summit back in August, Linus said when such a case
| exists, it is best to make a separate branch based off of his
| tree and place the change there. This way, the repositories
| that need to share the change can both pull them in and the
| SHA1 will match for both. Whichever branch is pulled in first
| by Linus will also pull in the necessary change for the other
| branch as well.

Pull ftrace updates from Steve Rostedt:
" This patch series extends ftrace function tracing utility to be
more dynamic for its users. It allows for data passing to the callback
functions, as well as reading regs as if a breakpoint were to trigger
at function entry.
The main goal of this patch series was to allow kprobes to use ftrace
as an optimized probe point when a probe is placed on an ftrace nop.
With lots of help from Masami Hiramatsu, and going through lots of
iterations, we finally came up with a good solution. "
