Because acpi_install_fixed_event_handler() enables the event
automatically on success, it is incorrect to call it before the
handler routine passed to it is ready to handle events.
Unfortunately, the rtc-cmos driver does exactly the incorrect thing
by calling cmos_wake_setup(), which passes rtc_handler() to
acpi_install_fixed_event_handler(), before cmos_do_probe(), because
rtc_handler() uses dev_get_drvdata() to get to the cmos object
pointer and the driver data pointer is only populated in
cmos_do_probe().
This leads to a NULL pointer dereference in rtc_handler() on boot
if the RTC fixed event happens to be active at the init time.
To address this issue, change the initialization ordering of the
driver so that cmos_wake_setup() is always called after a successful
cmos_do_probe() call.
While at it, change cmos_pnp_probe() to call cmos_do_probe() after
the initial if () statement used for computing the IRQ argument to
be passed to cmos_do_probe() which is cleaner than calling it in
each branch of that if () (local variable "irq" can be of type int,
because it is passed to that function as an argument of type int).
Note that commit 6492fed7d8 ("rtc: rtc-cmos: Do not check
ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0") caused this issue to affect a larger number
of systems, because previously it only affected systems with
ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 set, but it is present regardless of that
commit.

The prospective callers of rpm_resume() passing RPM_NOWAIT to it may
be confused when it returns 0 without actually resuming the device
which may happen if the device is suspending at the given time and it
will only resume when the suspend in progress has completed. To avoid
that confusion, return -EINPROGRESS from rpm_resume() in that case.
Since none of the current callers passing RPM_NOWAIT to rpm_resume()
check its return value, this change has no functional impact.

In principle, it should be valid to pass NULL as the ACPI device
pointer to acpi_device_get_power() and acpi_device_set_power() and they
both are expected to return -EINVAL in that case, but that has been
broken recently by commit 62fcb99bdf ("ACPI: Drop parent field from
struct acpi_device") which has caused the ACPI device pointer to be
dereferenced in these functions before the NULL check.
Fix that and while at it make acpi_device_set_power() only use the
parent field if the target ACPI device object's ignore_parent flag
in not set.

The ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 flag merely means that it is better to
use low-power S0 idle on the given platform than S3 (provided that
the latter is supported) and it doesn't preclude using either of
them (which of them will be used depends on the choices made by user
space).
For this reason, there is no benefit from checking that flag in
ahci_update_initial_lpm_policy().
First off, it cannot be a bug to do S3 with policy set to either
ATA_LPM_MIN_POWER_WITH_PARTIAL or ATA_LPM_MIN_POWER, because S3 can be
used on systems with ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 set and it must work if
really supported, so the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 check is not needed to
protect the S3-capable systems from failing.
Second, suspend-to-idle can be carried out on a system with
ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 unset and it is expected to work, so if setting
policy to either ATA_LPM_MIN_POWER_WITH_PARTIAL or ATA_LPM_MIN_POWER is
needed to handle that case correctly, it should be done regardless of
the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 value.
Accordingly, replace the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 check in
ahci_update_initial_lpm_policy() with pm_suspend_default_s2idle()
which is more general and also takes the user's preference into
account and drop the CONFIG_ACPI #ifdef around it that is not necessary
any more.

According to the ACPI specification [1], the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0

given platform than S3 (provided that the latter is supported) and it
doesn't preclude using either of them (which of them will be used
depends on the choices made by user space).
However, on some systems that flag is used to indicate whether or not
to enable special firmware mechanics allowing the system to save more
energy when suspended to idle. If that flag is unset, doing so is
generally risky.
Accordingly, add a comment to explain the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 check
in amdgpu_acpi_is_s0ix_active(), the purpose of which is otherwise
somewhat unclear.

The parent field in struct acpi_device is, in fact, redundant,
because the dev.parent field in it effectively points to the same
object and it is used by the driver core.
Accordingly, the parent field can be dropped from struct acpi_device
and for this purpose define acpi_dev_parent() to retrieve a parent
struct acpi_device pointer from the dev.parent field in struct
acpi_device. Next, update all of the users of the parent field
in struct acpi_device to use acpi_dev_parent() instead of it and
drop it.
While at it, drop the ACPI_IS_ROOT_DEVICE() macro that is only used

There is a problem with the current revision checks in
is_cppc_supported() that they essentially prevent the CPPC support
from working if a new _CPC package format revision being a proper
superset of the v3 and only causing _CPC to return a package with more
entries (while retaining the types and meaning of the entries defined by
the v3) is introduced in the future and used by the platform firmware.
In that case, as long as the number of entries in the _CPC return
package is at least CPPC_V3_NUM_ENT, it should be perfectly fine to
use the v3 support code and disregard the additional package entries
added by the new package format revision.
For this reason, drop is_cppc_supported() altogether, put the revision
checks directly into acpi_cppc_processor_probe() so they are easier to
follow and rework them to take the case mentioned above into account.

Because suspend-to-idle is always supported and on x86 it is the only
way to suspend the system if S3 is not supported by the platform, the
kernel attempts to enter low-power S0 idle in the suspend-to-idle flow
regardless of whether or not the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 flag is set in
the FADT. However, if that flag is not set, residency counters
associated with low-power S0 idle may not count and the platform may
refuse to put the EC into a low-power mode, for example.
For this reason, print diagnostic messages when the platform should
achieve significant energy savings in low-power S0 idle (because the
ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 flag is set in the FADT) and when
suspend-to-idle becomes the default suspend method (because low-power
S0 idle should be equally or more efficient than S3, if available).

If ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 is not set, this doesn't mean that low-power
S0 idle is not usable. It merely means that using S3 on the given
system is more beneficial from the energy saving perspective than using
low-power S0 idle, as long as S3 is supported.
Suspend-to-idle is still a valid suspend mode if ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0

is sufficient to distinguish suspend-to-idle from S3, so drop the
confusing ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 check.

If the PNP0D80 device is present and its _DSM appears to be valid,
there is no reason to avoid using it even if ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0

Because pm_runtime_get_suppliers() bumps up the rpm_active counter
of each device link to a supplier of the given device in addition
to bumping up the supplier's PM-runtime usage counter, a runtime
suspend of the consumer device may case the latter to go down to 0
when pm_runtime_put_suppliers() is running on a remote CPU. If that
happens after pm_runtime_put_suppliers() has released power.lock for
the consumer device, and a runtime resume of that device takes place
immediately after it, before pm_runtime_put() is called for the
supplier, that pm_runtime_put() call may cause the supplier to be
suspended even though the consumer is active.
To prevent that from happening, modify pm_runtime_get_suppliers() to
call pm_runtime_get_sync() for the given device's suppliers without
touching the rpm_active counters of the involved device links
Accordingly, modify pm_runtime_put_suppliers() to call pm_runtime_put()
for the given device's suppliers without looking at the rpm_active
counters of the device links at hand. [This is analogous to what
happened before commit 4c06c4e6cf ("driver core: Fix possible
supplier PM-usage counter imbalance").]
Since pm_runtime_get_suppliers() sets supplier_preactivated for each
device link where the supplier's PM-runtime usage counter has been
incremented and pm_runtime_put_suppliers() calls pm_runtime_put() for
the suppliers whose device links have supplier_preactivated set, the
PM-runtime usage counter is balanced for each supplier and this is
independent of the runtime suspend and resume of the consumer device.
However, in case a device link with DL_FLAG_PM_RUNTIME set is dropped
during the consumer device probe, so pm_runtime_get_suppliers() bumps
up the supplier's PM-runtime usage counter, but it cannot be dropped by
pm_runtime_put_suppliers(), make device_link_release_fn() take care of
that.
