Sam Ravnborg a439fe51a1 sparc, sparc64: use arch/sparc/include
The majority of this patch was created by the following script:

***
ASM=arch/sparc/include/asm
mkdir -p $ASM
git mv include/asm-sparc64/ftrace.h $ASM
git rm include/asm-sparc64/*
git mv include/asm-sparc/* $ASM
sed -ie 's/asm-sparc64/asm/g' $ASM/*
sed -ie 's/asm-sparc/asm/g' $ASM/*
***

The rest was an update of the top-level Makefile to use sparc
for header files when sparc64 is being build.
And a small fixlet to pick up the correct unistd.h from
sparc64 code.

Sam Ravnborg 09748e178b kconfig: make defconfig is no longer chatty
make defconfig generated a lot of output
then noone actually read.
Use conf_set_all_new_symbols() to generate the default
configuration and avoid the chatty output.

A typical run now looks like this:
$ make  defconfig
*** Default configuration is based on 'i386_defconfig'
arch/x86/configs/i386_defconfig:13:warning: trying to assign nonexistent symbol SEMAPHORE_SLEEPERS
arch/x86/configs/i386_defconfig:176:warning: trying to assign nonexistent symbol PREEMPT_BKL
...
arch/x86/configs/i386_defconfig:1386:warning: trying to assign nonexistent symbol INSTRUMENTATION
$

As an added benefit we now clearly see the warnings generated
in the start of the process.

Sam Ravnborg cd9140e1e7 kconfig: make oldconfig is now less chatty
Previously when running "make oldconfig" we saw all the propmt lines
from kconfig and noone actully read this.

With this patch the user will only see output if there is new symbols.
This will be seen as "make oldconfig" runs which does not generate any output.

A typical run now looks like this:

$ make oldconfig
scripts/kconfig/conf -o arch/x86/Kconfig
$

If a new symbol is found then we restart the config process like this:
$ make oldconfig
scripts/kconfig/conf -o arch/x86/Kconfig
*
* Restart config...
*
*
* General setup
*
Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers (EXPERIMENTAL) [Y/n/?] y
Local version - append to kernel release (LOCALVERSION) []
...

The bahaviour is similar to what we know when running the implicit
oldconfig target "make silentoldconfig".
"make silentoldconfig" are run as part of the kernel build process
if the configuration has changed.

Sam Ravnborg f443d2eccf kconfig: speed up all*config + randconfig
Drop the chatty mode when we generate the all*config, randconfig

at the output anyway.

Sam Ravnborg 5e4786f75d kbuild: add arch/$ARCH/include to search path
This patch conclude the support for

   arch/$ARCH/include

Note: The individual architectures will most likely require
      a few minor patches to support locating header files in
      arch/$ARCH/include

Testing shows that it worked out-of-the-box for sparc.
x86 required a few trivial changes in the arch
specific Makefile and a few include paths had to be adjusted.

Sam Ravnborg 2e57d05116 kbuild: asm symlink support for arch/$ARCH/include
Adjust the asm symlink support so we do not create the
symlink unless really needed.
We check the precense of include/asm-$ARCH by checking
for the system.h file. We may end up with a stale directory
so it is not enough to check if the directory is present.

Sam Ravnborg db1bec4f52 kbuild: install all headers when arch is changed
We see some header files that are selected dependent on
the actual architecture so force a reinstallation

This slows down "make headers_check_all" but then
we better reflect reality.

Sam Ravnborg 7712401ae9 kbuild: optimize headers_* targets
Move the core functionality of headers_install
and headers_check to two small perl scripts.
The makefile is adapted to use the perl scrip and
changed to operate on all files in a directory.
So if one file is changed then all files in the
directory is processed.

perl were chosen for the helper scripts because this
is pure text processing which perl is good at and
especially the headers_check.pl script are expected to
see changes / new checks implmented.

The speed is ~300% faster on this box.
And the output generated to the screen is now down to
two lines per directory (one for install, one for check)
so it is easier to scroll back after a kernel build.

The perl scripts has been brought to sanity by patient
feedback from: Vegard Nossum <vegard.nossum@gmail.com>

Sam Ravnborg 88181ec30f kbuild: only one call for include/ in make headers_*
Move it to the top-level file to decide if we install/check
the generic headers or the arch specific headers.

This revealed a long standing bug where "make headers_check_all"
relied on the files in asm/ for the current architecture.
So make headers_check_all is now broken by this commit.

In addition:

o add a simpler way to detect if an arch support
  exporting header files.

o add 'set -e;' so we error out early if
  make headers_check_all fails.

o add sparc64 and cris to arch we do not process
  in make headers_*_all because:

    sparc64 - use sparc to export headers
    cris - is know seriously broken

unifdef utility is fast enough to warrant that we always
run the scripts through unifdef.

This patch runs all headers listed with header-y and unifdef-y

Next step is to drop unifdef-y in all Kbuild files and

Sam Ravnborg f5e706ad88 sparc: join the remaining header files
With this commit all sparc64 header files are moved to asm-sparc.
The remaining files (71 files) were too different to be trivially
merged so divide them up in a _32.h and a _64.h file which
are both included from the file with no bit size.

The following script were used:
cd include
FILES=`wc -l asm-sparc64/*h | grep -v '^     1' | cut -b 20-`

for FILE in ${FILES}; do
  echo $FILE:
  BASE=`echo $FILE | cut -d '.' -f 1`
  FN32=${BASE}_32.h
  FN64=${BASE}_64.h
  GUARD=___ASM_SPARC_`echo $BASE | tr '-' '_' | tr [:lower:] [:upper:]`_H
  git mv asm-sparc/$FILE asm-sparc/$FN32
  git mv asm-sparc64/$FILE asm-sparc/$FN64
  echo git mv done
  printf "#ifndef %s\n" $GUARD                             >   asm-sparc/$FILE
  printf "#define %s\n" $GUARD                             >>  asm-sparc/$FILE
  printf "#if defined(__sparc__) && defined(__arch64__)\n" >>  asm-sparc/$FILE
  printf "#include <asm-sparc/%s>\n" $FN64                 >>  asm-sparc/$FILE
  printf "#else\n"                                         >>  asm-sparc/$FILE
  printf "#include <asm-sparc/%s>\n" $FN32                 >>  asm-sparc/$FILE
  printf "#endif\n"                                        >>  asm-sparc/$FILE
  printf "#endif\n"                                        >>  asm-sparc/$FILE
  git add asm-sparc/$FILE
  echo new file done
  printf "#include <asm-sparc/%s>\n" $FILE                 >  asm-sparc64/$FILE
  git add asm-sparc64/$FILE
  echo sparc64 file done
done

The guard contains three '_' to avoid conflict with existing guards.
In additing the two Kbuild files are emptied to avoid breaking
headers_* targets.
We will reintroduce the exported header files when the necessary
kbuild changes are merged.

A manual inspection revealed that the following headerfiles
contained only trivial differences:
hw_irq.h idprom.h kmap_types.h kvm.h spinlock_types.h sunbpp.h unaligned.h

qualifer that sparc missed in spinlock_types.h.

In addition a few comments were updated.

Sam Ravnborg 075ae52532 sparc: when header files are equal use asm-sparc version
Used the following script to find equal header files:
SPARC64=`ls asm-sparc64`

	if [ $? = 0 ]; then
		printf "#include <asm-sparc/%s>\n" $FILE > asm-sparc64/$FILE

asm-generic, but by including the file from asm-sparc
we know they are equal for sparc and sparc64.

Sam Ravnborg 09d3e1baa1 sparc: copy exported sparc64 specific header files to asm-sparc
Copy was done using the following simple script:

set -e
SPARC64="h display7seg.h envctrl.h psrcompat.h pstate.h uctx.h utrap.h watchdog.h"
for FILE in ${SPARC64}; do
	if [ -f asm-sparc/$FILE ]; then

	fi
	cat asm-sparc64/$FILE > asm-sparc/$FILE
	printf "#include <asm-sparc/$FILE>\n" > asm-sparc64/$FILE
done

The name of the copied files are added to asm-sparc/Kbuild

David Miller noticed that the build of vmlinux.lds
failed to use the -m64 specifier.
This caused the build to break with a bi-arch gcc with
unified headers.

Add the -m64 option to CPPFLAGS_vmlinux.lds so we
have the correct defines available when building
vmliux.lds.

Sam Ravnborg 4d7365d664 kbuild: ignore powerpc specific symbols in modpost
Kumar Gala <galak@kernel.crashing.org> wrote:
We have a case in powerpc in which we want to link some library
routines with all module objects. The routines are intended for
handling out-of-line function call register save/restore so having
them as EXPORT_SYMBOL() is counter productive (we do also need to
link the same "library" code into the kernel).

Without this patch a powerpc build would error out and fail
to build modules with the added register save/restore module.

There were two obvious solutions:
1) To link the .o file before the modpost stage
2) To ignore the symbols in modpost

Option 1) was ruled out because we do not have any separate
linking stage for single file modules.

This patch implements option 2 - and do so only for powerpc.

The symbols we ignore are all undefined symbols named:
_restgpr_*, _savegpr_*, _rest32gpr_*, _save32gpr_*

Sam Ravnborg 96d97f262a kbuild: fix $(src) assignmnet with external modules
When we introduced support for KBUILD_EXTRA_SYMBOLS
we started to include the externam module's kbuild
file when doing the final modpost step.

As external modules often do:
ccflags-y := -I$(src)

We had problems because $(src) was unassinged and
gcc then used the next parameter for -I resulting in
strange build failures.

Fix is to assign $(src) and $(obj) when building
external modules.

init/Kconfig contains a list of configs that are searched

In kernel/acpi/realmode/Makefile use the 'always'

In acpi/Makefile we then do not need to specify the
requested target and we avoid the message from make:

   `arch/x86/kernel/acpi/realmode/wakeup.bin' is up to date.

Sam Ravnborg b9b39bfba5 x86: use defconfigs from x86/configs/*
Daniel Drake <dsd@gentoo.org> reported:

In 2.6.23, if you unpacked a kernel source tarball and then
ran "make menuconfig" you'd be presented with this message:
    # using defaults found in arch/i386/defconfig

and the default options would be set.

The same thing in 2.6.24 does not give you any "using defaults" message, and
the default config options within menuconfig are rather blank (e.g. no PCI
support). You can work around this by explicitly running "make defconfig"
before menuconfig, but it would be nice to have the behaviour the way it was
for 2.6.23 (and the way it still is for other archs).

Fixed by adding a x86 specific defconfig list to Kconfig.

Fix following warning:
WARNING: vmlinux.o(.text+0xebfd04): Section mismatch in reference from the function coretemp_cpu_callback() to the function .cpuinit.text:coretemp_device_add()

coretemp_cpu_callback() are only used inside a

Building vmlinux.o were moved up in the dependency chain so we started
to build it before the kallsym stuff. This was done to let modpost
report section mismatch bugs even when the final link failed.

Originally I had expected the dependency of $(kallsyms.o) to
cover this but it turns out that we need to be even more explicit.
Fix this by adding a conditional dependency on firat target
used in the kallsyms serie of builds.

I just read the excellent LWN writeup of the vmsplice
security thing, and that got me wondering why this attack
wasn't stopped by the CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR option...
because it plain should have been...

Some analysis later.. it turns out that the following line
in the top level Makefile, added by you in October 2007,
entirely disables CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR ;(
With this line removed the exploit will be nicely stopped.

CFLAGS          += $(call cc-option, -fno-stack-protector)

Now I realize that certain distros have patched gcc to
compensate for their lack of distro wide CFLAGS, and it's
great to work around that... but would there be a way to NOT
disable this for CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR please?
It would have made this exploit not possible for those kernels
that enable this feature (and that includes distros like Fedora)
===

Move the assignment to KBUILD_CFLAGS up before including
the arch specific Makefile so arch makefiles may override
the setting.
