Add a consistency subtest to htab_reuse that detects torn writes
caused by the BPF_F_LOCK lockless update racing with element
reallocation in alloc_htab_elem().
The test uses three thread roles started simultaneously via a pipe:
- locked updaters: BPF_F_LOCK|BPF_EXIST in-place updates
- delete+update workers: delete then BPF_ANY|BPF_F_LOCK insert
- locked readers: BPF_F_LOCK lookup checking value consistency

When a BPF_F_LOCK update races with a concurrent delete, the freed
element can be immediately recycled by alloc_htab_elem(). The fast path
in htab_map_update_elem() performs a lockless lookup and then calls
copy_map_value_locked() under the element's spin_lock. If
alloc_htab_elem() recycles the same memory, it overwrites the value
with plain copy_map_value(), without taking the spin_lock, causing
torn writes.
Use copy_map_value_locked() when BPF_F_LOCK is set so the new element's
value is written under the embedded spin_lock, serializing against any
stale lock holders.

BTF func/line info on FEAT_BTF_FUNC kernel support, and resolve

Replace bpf_mem_alloc/bpf_mem_free with
kmalloc_nolock/kfree_rcu for bpf_task_work_ctx.
Replace guard(rcu_tasks_trace)() with guard(rcu)() in
bpf_task_work_irq(). The function only accesses ctx struct members
(not map values), so tasks trace protection is not needed - regular
RCU is sufficient since ctx is freed via kfree_rcu. The guard in
bpf_task_work_callback() remains as tasks trace since it accesses map
values from process context.
Sleepable BPF programs hold rcu_read_lock_trace but not
regular rcu_read_lock. Since kfree_rcu
waits for a regular RCU grace period, the ctx memory can be freed
while a sleepable program is still running. Add scoped_guard(rcu)
around the pointer read and refcount tryget in
bpf_task_work_acquire_ctx to close this race window.
Since kfree_rcu uses call_rcu internally which is not safe from
NMI context, defer destruction via irq_work when irqs are disabled.
For the lost-cmpxchg path the ctx was never published, so
kfree_nolock is safe.

Previously, veristat opened a separate bpf_object for every program in a

Use bpf_object__prepare() once, then call bpf_program__clone() for each

Introduce SKIP_LLVM, SKIP_LIBBFD, and SKIP_CRYPTO build flags that let
users build bpftool without these optional dependencies.
SKIP_LLVM=1 skips LLVM even when detected. SKIP_LIBBFD=1 prevents the
libbfd JIT disassembly fallback when LLVM is absent. Together, they
produce a bpftool with no disassembly support.
SKIP_CRYPTO=1 excludes sign.c and removes the -lcrypto link dependency.
Inline stubs in main.h return errors with a clear message if signing

Use BPFTOOL_WITHOUT_CRYPTO (not HAVE_LIBCRYPTO_SUPPORT) as the C

overwrote our value, and we must retry.

The arraymap and hashtab duplicate the logic that checks for and frees
internal structs (timer, workqueue, task_work) based on
BTF record flags. Centralize this by introducing two helpers:
* bpf_map_has_internal_structs(map)

Implementation of the new bpf_task_work_schedule kfuncs, that let a BPF
program schedule task_work callbacks for a target task:
* bpf_task_work_schedule_signal() - schedules with TWA_SIGNAL
* bpf_task_work_schedule_resume() - schedules with TWA_RESUME
Each map value should embed a struct bpf_task_work, which the kernel
side pairs with struct bpf_task_work_kern, containing a pointer to
struct bpf_task_work_ctx, that maintains metadata relevant for the
concrete callback scheduling.
A small state machine and refcounting scheme ensures safe reuse and
teardown. State transitions:
_______________________________
| |
v |
[standby] ---> [pending] --> [scheduling] --> [scheduled]
^ |________________|_________
| |
| v
| [running]
|_______________________________________________________|
All states may transition into FREED state:
[pending] [scheduling] [scheduled] [running] [standby] -> [freed]
A FREED terminal state coordinates with map-value
deletion (bpf_task_work_cancel_and_free()).
Scheduling itself is deferred via irq_work to keep the kfunc callable
from NMI context.
Lifetime is guarded with refcount_t + RCU Tasks Trace.
Main components:
* struct bpf_task_work_context – Metadata and state management per task
work.
* enum bpf_task_work_state – A state machine to serialize work
scheduling and execution.
* bpf_task_work_schedule() – The central helper that initiates
scheduling.
* bpf_task_work_acquire_ctx() - Attempts to take ownership of the context,
pointed by passed struct bpf_task_work, allocates new context if none
exists yet.
* bpf_task_work_callback() – Invoked when the actual task_work runs.
* bpf_task_work_irq() – An intermediate step (runs in softirq context)
to enqueue task work.
* bpf_task_work_cancel_and_free() – Cleanup for deleted BPF map entries.
Flow of successful task work scheduling
1) bpf_task_work_schedule_* is called from BPF code.
2) Transition state from STANDBY to PENDING, mark context as owned by
this task work scheduler
3) irq_work_queue() schedules bpf_task_work_irq().
4) Transition state from PENDING to SCHEDULING (noop if transition
successful)
5) bpf_task_work_irq() attempts task_work_add(). If successful, state
transitions to SCHEDULED.
6) Task work calls bpf_task_work_callback(), which transition state to

This patch adds necessary plumbing in verifier, syscall and maps to
support handling new kfunc bpf_task_work_schedule and kernel structure
bpf_task_work. The idea is similar to how we already handle bpf_wq and
bpf_timer.
verifier changes validate calls to bpf_task_work_schedule to make sure
it is safe and expected invariants hold.
btf part is required to detect bpf_task_work structure inside map value
and store its offset, which will be used in the next patch to calculate
key and value addresses.
arraymap and hashtab changes are needed to handle freeing of the
bpf_task_work: run code needed to deinitialize it, for example cancel
task_work callback if possible.
The use of bpf_task_work and proper implementation for kfuncs are
introduced in the next patch.

The verifier currently enforces a zero return value for all async
callbacks—a constraint originally introduced for bpf_timer. That
restriction is too narrow for other async use cases.
Relax the rule by allowing non-zero return codes from async callbacks in
general, while preserving the zero-return requirement for bpf_timer to
maintain its existing semantics.

Add the ability to dump BPF program instructions directly from veristat.
Previously, inspecting a program required separate bpftool invocations:
one to load and another to dump it, which meant running multiple
commands.
During active development, it's common for developers to use veristat
for testing verification. Integrating instruction dumping into veristat
reduces the need to switch tools and simplifies the workflow.
By making this information more readily accessible, this change aims
to streamline the BPF development cycle and improve usability for
developers.
This implementation leverages bpftool, by running it directly via popen
to avoid any code duplication and keep veristat simple.

This patch introduces a new set of kfuncs for working with dynptrs in
BPF programs, enabling reading variable-length user or kernel data
into dynptr directly. To enable memory-safety, verifier allows only
constant-sized reads via existing bpf_probe_read_{user|kernel} etc.
kfuncs, dynptr-based kfuncs allow dynamically-sized reads without memory
safety shortcomings.
The following kfuncs are introduced:
* `bpf_probe_read_kernel_dynptr()`: probes kernel-space data into a dynptr
* `bpf_probe_read_user_dynptr()`: probes user-space data into a dynptr
* `bpf_probe_read_kernel_str_dynptr()`: probes kernel-space string into
a dynptr
* `bpf_probe_read_user_str_dynptr()`: probes user-space string into a
dynptr
* `bpf_copy_from_user_dynptr()`: sleepable, copies user-space data into
a dynptr for the current task
* `bpf_copy_from_user_str_dynptr()`: sleepable, copies user-space string
into a dynptr for the current task
* `bpf_copy_from_user_task_dynptr()`: sleepable, copies user-space data
of the task into a dynptr
* `bpf_copy_from_user_task_str_dynptr()`: sleepable, copies user-space
string of the task into a dynptr
The implementation is built on two generic functions:
* __bpf_dynptr_copy
* __bpf_dynptr_copy_str
These functions take function pointers as arguments, enabling the
copying of data from various sources, including both kernel and user
space.
Use __always_inline for generic functions and callbacks to make sure the
compiler doesn't generate indirect calls into callbacks, which is more
expensive, especially on some kernel configurations. Inlining allows
compiler to put direct calls into all the specific callback implementations
(copy_user_data_sleepable, copy_user_data_nofault, and so on).

strncpy_from_user_nofault() should return the length of the copied string
including the trailing NUL, but if the argument unsafe_addr points to an
empty string ({'\0'}), the return value is 0.
This happens as strncpy_from_user() copies terminal symbol into dst and
returns 0 (as expected), but strncpy_from_user_nofault does not modify ret
as it is not equal to count and not greater than 0, so 0 is returned,
which contradicts the contract.

Introduce bpf_object__prepare API: additional intermediate preparation
step that performs ELF processing, relocations, prepares final state of
BPF program instructions (accessible with bpf_program__insns()), creates

We anticipate few use cases for this API, such as:
* Use prepare to initialize bpf_token, without loading freplace
programs, unlocking possibility to lookup BTF of other programs.
* Execute prepare to obtain finalized BPF program instructions without
loading programs, enabling tools like veristat to process one program at

To better verify some complex BPF programs we'd like to preset global
variables.
This patch introduces CLI argument `--set-global-vars` or `-G` to
veristat, that allows presetting values to global variables defined
in BPF program. For example:
prog.c:
```
enum Enum { ELEMENT1 = 0, ELEMENT2 = 5 };
const volatile __s64 a = 5;
const volatile __u8 b = 5;
const volatile enum Enum c = ELEMENT2;
const volatile bool d = false;
char arr[4] = {0};
SEC("tp_btf/sched_switch")
int BPF_PROG(...)
{
bpf_printk("%c\n", arr[a]);
bpf_printk("%c\n", arr[b]);
bpf_printk("%c\n", arr[c]);
bpf_printk("%c\n", arr[d]);
return 0;
}
```
By default verification of the program fails:
```
./veristat prog.bpf.o
```
By presetting global variables, we can make verification pass:
```
./veristat wq.bpf.o -G "a = 0" -G "b = 1" -G "c = 2" -G "d = 3"
The current default buffer size of 16MB allocated by veristat is no
longer sufficient to hold the verifier logs of some production BPF
programs. To address this issue, we need to increase the verifier log
limit.
Commit 7a9f5c65ab ("bpf: increase verifier log limit") has already
increased the supported buffer size by the kernel, but veristat users
need to explicitly pass a log size argument to use the bigger log.
This patch adds a function to detect the maximum verifier log size
supported by the kernel and uses that by default in veristat.
This ensures that veristat can handle larger verifier logs without
Production BPF programs are increasing in number of instructions and states
to the point, where optimising verification process for them is necessary
to avoid running into instruction limit. Authors of those BPF programs
need to analyze verifier output, for example, collecting the most
frequent source code lines to understand which part of the program has
the biggest verification cost.
This patch introduces `--top-src-lines` flag in veristat.
`--top-src-lines=N` makes veristat output N the most popular sorce code
lines, parsed from verification log.
Existing algorithm for BTF C dump sorting uses only types and names of
