* A CallStackSegment (henceforth referred to as a 'segment') logically
* contains the (possibly empty) set of stack frames associated with a single
* activation of the VM and the slots associated with each frame. A segment may
* or may not be "in" a context and a segment is in a context iff its set of
* stack frames is nonempty. A segment and its contained frames/slots also have
* an implied memory layout, as described in the js::StackSpace comment.
*
* The set of stack frames in a non-empty segment start at the segment's
* "current frame", which is the most recently pushed frame, and ends at the
* segment's "initial frame". Note that, while all stack frames in a segment
* are down-linked, not all down-linked frames are in the same segment. Hence,
* for a segment |css|, |css->getInitialFrame()->down| may be non-null and in a
* different segment. This occurs when the VM reenters itself (via js_Invoke or
* js_Execute). In full generality, a single context may contain a forest of
* trees of stack frames. With respect to this forest, a segment contains a
* linear path along a single tree, not necessarily to the root.
*
* A segment in a context may additionally be "active" or "suspended". A
* suspended segment |css| has a "suspended frame" which serves as the current
* frame of |css|. Additionally, a suspended segment has "suspended regs",
* which is a snapshot of |cx->regs| when |css| was suspended. There is at most
* one active segment in a given context. Segments in a context execute LIFO
* and are maintained in a stack. The top of this stack is the context's
* "current segment". If a context |cx| has an active segment |css|, then:
* 1. |css| is |cx|'s current segment,
* 2. |cx->fp != NULL|, and
* 3. |css|'s current frame is |cx->fp|.
* Moreover, |cx->fp != NULL| iff |cx| has an active segment.
*
* Finally, (to support JS_SaveFrameChain/JS_RestoreFrameChain) a suspended
* segment may or may not be "saved". Normally, when the active segment is
* popped, the previous segment (which is necessarily suspended) becomes
* active. If the previous segment was saved, however, then it stays suspended
* until it is made active by a call to JS_RestoreFrameChain. This is why a
* context may have a current segment, but not an active segment.

* Thread stack layout
*
* Each JSThreadData has one associated StackSpace object which allocates all
* segments for the thread. StackSpace performs all such allocations in a
* single, fixed-size buffer using a specific layout scheme that allows some
* associations between segments, frames, and slots to be implicit, rather
* than explicitly stored as pointers. To maintain useful invariants, stack
* space is not given out arbitrarily, but rather allocated/deallocated for
* specific purposes. The use cases currently supported are: calling a function
* with arguments (e.g. js_Invoke), executing a script (e.g. js_Execute) and
* inline interpreter calls. See associated member functions below.
*
* First, we consider the layout of individual segments. (See the
* js::CallStackSegment comment for terminology.) A non-empty segment (i.e., a
* segment in a context) has the following layout:
*
* initial frame current frame -------. if regs,
* .------------. | | regs->sp
* | V V V
* |segment| slots |frame| slots |frame| slots |frame| slots |
* | ^ | ^ |
* ? <----------' `----------' `----------'
* down down down
*
* Moreover, the bytes in the following ranges form a contiguous array of
2010-07-14 23:19:36 -07:00
* Values that are marked during GC:
* 1. between a segment and its first frame
* 2. between two adjacent frames in a segment
* 3. between a segment's current frame and (if fp->regs) fp->regs->sp
2010-07-14 23:19:36 -07:00
* Thus, the VM must ensure that all such Values are safe to be marked.
*
* An empty segment roots the initial slots before the initial frame is
* pushed and after the initial frame has been popped (perhaps to be followed
* by subsequent initial frame pushes/pops...).
*
* initialArgEnd
* .---------.
* | V
* |segment| slots |
*
* Above the level of segments, a StackSpace is simply a contiguous sequence
* of segments kept in a linked list:
*
* base currentSegment firstUnused end
* | | | |
* V V V V
* |segment| --- |segment| --- |segment| ------- | |
* | ^ | ^ |
* 0 <---' `-----------' `-----------'
* previous previous previous
*
* Both js::StackSpace and JSContext maintain a stack of segments, the top of
* which is the "current segment" for that thread or context, respectively.
* Since different contexts can arbitrarily interleave execution in a single
* thread, these stacks are different enough that a segment needs both
* "previousInMemory" and "previousInContext".
*
* For example, in a single thread, a function in segment C1 in a context CX1
* may call out into C++ code that reenters the VM in a context CX2, which
* creates a new segment C2 in CX2, and CX1 may or may not equal CX2.
*
* Note that there is some structure to this interleaving of segments:
* 1. the inclusion from segments in a context to segments in a thread
* preserves order (in terms of previousInContext and previousInMemory,
* respectively).
* 2. the mapping from stack frames to their containing segment preserves
* order (in terms of down and previousInContext, respectively).

Bug 480132: Clone lexical blocks only when needed. r=igor Terminology: A "script block" is an object of class Block allocated by the byte compiler and associated with a script. Script blocks are never modified, and may be used as a prototype for a "closure block": A "closure block" is an object of class Block that holds variables that have been closed over (although we actually leave the variables on the stack until we leave their dynamic scope). A closure block is a clone of a script block (its prototype is a script block). Adjust the meanings of fp->blockChain and fp->scopeChain: fp->blockChain is always the innermost script block in whose static scope we're executing. fp->scopeChain is the current scope chain, including 'call' objects and closure blocks for those function calls and blocks in whose static scope we are currently executing, and 'with' objects for with statements; the chain is typically terminated by a global object. However, as an optimization, the young end of the chain omits block objects we have not yet needed to clone. Closures need fully reified scope chains, so have js_GetScopeChain reify any closure blocks missing from the young end of fp->scopeChain by cloning script blocks as needed from fp->blockChain. Thus, if we never actually close over a particular block, we never place a closure block for it on fp->scopeChain. Have JSOP_ENTERBLOCK and JSOP_LEAVEBLOCK always keep fp->blockChain current. When JSOP_LEAVEBLOCK pops a block from fp->blockChain that has been cloned on fp->scopeChain, pop fp->scopeChain as well. Remove the JSFRAME_POP_BLOCKS flag, as it is no longer needed. Ensure that the JIT won't have to create closure blocks or call js_PutBlockObject; it can't handle those things yet. Note our current script block when we begin recording. Abort recording if we leave that block; we can't tell in advance whether it will need to be "put" in future trace invocations. Leave trace if we call js_GetScopeChain while in the static scope of lexical blocks. Remove JIT tests based on JSFRAME_POP_BLOCKS. Verify that generators capture the correct value for blockChain. Add a constructor to JSAutoTempValueRooter for rooting JSObject pointers.

* Slightly more readable macros for testing per-context option settings (also
* to hide bitset implementation detail).
*
* JSOPTION_XML must be handled specially in order to propagate from compile-
* to run-time (from cx->options to script->version/cx->version). To do that,
* we copy JSOPTION_XML from cx->options into cx->version as JSVERSION_HAS_XML
* whenever options are set, and preserve this XML flag across version number
* changes done via the JS_SetVersion API.
*
* But when executing a script or scripted function, the interpreter changes
* cx->version, including the XML flag, to script->version. Thus JSOPTION_XML
* is a compile-time option that causes a run-time version change during each
* activation of the compiled script. That version change has the effect of
* changing JS_HAS_XML_OPTION, so that any compiling done via eval enables XML
* support. If an XML-enabled script or function calls a non-XML function,
* the flag bit will be cleared during the callee's activation.
*
* Note that JS_SetVersion API calls never pass JSVERSION_HAS_XML or'd into
* that API's version parameter.
*
* Note also that script->version must contain this XML option flag in order
* for XDR'ed scripts to serialize and deserialize with that option preserved
* for detection at run-time. We can't copy other compile-time options into
* script->version because that would break backward compatibility (certain
* other options, e.g. JSOPTION_VAROBJFIX, are analogous to JSOPTION_XML).
