After switching to the kernel's default package scripts for our local
kernel RPM builds, we noticed that module BTF entries were missing:

Root cause: find-debuginfo.sh (from the debugedit package) prefers
eu-strip over strip when elfutils is installed, which is the common
case on RHEL 9. eu-strip removes non-allocated ELF sections, including
the .BTF section that contains BPF Type Format information for kernel
modules. Without .BTF, BPF tools (bpftool, bcc, bpftrace) cannot resolve
kernel types at runtime, and /sys/kernel/btf/<module> entries are not
created when modules are loaded.
Additionally, since commit 8646db2389 ("libbpf,bpf: Share BTF
relocate-related code with kernel"), modules contain a .BTF.base section
that maps distilled type IDs to vmlinux types. If .BTF.base is stripped,
btf_parse_module() falls back to vmlinux BTF directly, causing type ID
mismatches and rejecting the module's BTF entirely.
Fix by passing --keep-section .BTF and --keep-section .BTF.base via
_find_debuginfo_opts, which adds -K .BTF and -K .BTF.base to the
eu-strip/strip command, preserving both sections while allowing normal
debuginfo extraction to proceed.
After this change, all module BTF files are properly generated:

The package versioning scheme does not enable smooth upgrades from "rc"
releases to the corresponding stable releases (e.g. 7.0.0-rc7 -> 7.0.0)
because pacman considers that a downgrade due to the underscore in
pkgver (e.g. 7.0.0_rc7), see e.g. vercmp(8) for an explanation of the
package version comparison used by pacman. Package versions which are
derived from said releases (e.g. built from git revisions) are
similarly affected. Fix this by modifying pkgver in order to remove the
hyphen from kernel versions containing "-rcN", where N is a
non-negative integer.

Commit e2c318225a ("kbuild: deb-pkg: add
pkg.linux-upstream.nokernelheaders build profile") changed how
install-extmod-build gets called, making it always rebuild the host
programs below scripts/ if HOSTCC wasn't specified with its full triplet
on the make command line. That is, apparently, needed to fix up commit
f1d87664b8 ("kbuild: cross-compile linux-headers package when
possible") for cross-compiles. However, in the much more common case of
non-cross-compile builds this will lead to unnecessary rebuilding of
host tools including gcc plugins. This, in turn, will lead to a full
kernel rebuild on the next 'make bindeb-pkg' which is unfortunate.
Avoid that by only triggering the rebuild of host tools for actual
cross-compile builds.

This error comes from the automatic requirements feature of rpm. The
-debuginfo subpackage has no dependencies, so disable this feature with
'AutoReq: 0' for this subpackage, avoiding the error. This matches the
official %_debug_template macro that rpm provides. While automatic
provides should be default enabled, be explicit like %_debug_template
does.
Additionally, while in the area, add the manual debug information
package to the Development/Debug group, further aligning with
%_debug_template.

Commit 62089b8048 ("kbuild: rpm-pkg: Generate debuginfo package
manually") added uses of OBJCOPY and READELF, variables from Kbuild.
These variables are defined and work properly when using the binrpm-pkg
target because rpmbuild is run within Kbuild. However, these variables
are not defined when building from a source RPM package generated with
the srcrpm-pkg target, breaking the build when generating the debug info
subpackage.
Define a default value for these variables so that these commands
respect the value from Kbuild but continue to work when built from a
source RPM package.

Commit 62089b8048 ("kbuild: rpm-pkg: Generate debuginfo package
manually") moved away from the built-in RPM machinery for generating
-debuginfo packages to a more manual way to be compatible with module
signing, as the built-in machinery strips the modules after the
installation process, breaking the signatures.
Unfortunately, prior to rpm 4.20.0, there is a bug where a custom %files
directive is ignored for a -debuginfo subpackage [1], meaning builds
using older versions of RPM (such as on RHEL9 or RHEL10) fail with:

To workaround this, restrict the manual debug info package creation
process to when it is necessary (CONFIG_MODULE_SIG=y) and possible (when
using RPM >= 4.20.0). A follow up change will restore the RPM debuginfo
creation process using a separate internal flag to allow the package to
be built in more situations, as RPM 4.20.0 is a fairly recent version
and the built-in -debuginfo generation works fine when module signing is
disabled.

Currently, when cross-compiling and ccache is used, the expanding of CC
turns out to be without any quotes, leading to the following error:
make[4]: *** No rule to make target 'aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc'. Stop.
make[3]: *** [Makefile:2164: run-command] Error 2
And it makes sense, because after expansion it ends up like this:
make run-command KBUILD_RUN_COMMAND=+$(MAKE) \
HOSTCC=ccache aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc VPATH= srcroot=. $(build)= ...
So add another set of double quotes to surround whatever CC expands to
to make sure the aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc isn't expanded to something that
looks like an entirely separate target.

Commit b5e3956535 ("kbuild: install-extmod-build: Fix build when

expecting a relative path by using `realpath --relative-base=.`, but
this only works when the given directory is below the current directory.

The rpm-pkg make target currently suffers from a few issues related to
debuginfo:
1. debuginfo for things built into the kernel (vmlinux) is not available
in any RPM produced by make rpm-pkg. This makes using tools like
systemtap against a make rpm-pkg kernel impossible.
2. debug source for the kernel is not available. This means that
commands like 'disas /s' in gdb, which display source intermixed with
assembly, can only print file names/line numbers which then must be
painstakingly resolved to actual source in a separate editor.
3. debuginfo for modules is available, but it remains bundled with the
.ko files that contain module code, in the main kernel RPM. This is a
waste of space for users who do not need to debug the kernel (i.e.
most users).
Address all of these issues by additionally building a debuginfo RPM
when the kernel configuration allows for it, in line with standard
patterns followed by RPM distributors. With these changes:
1. systemtap now works (when these changes are backported to 6.11, since
systemtap lags a bit behind in compatibility), as verified by the
following simple test script:

3. The size of the main kernel package goes down substantially,
especially if many modules are built (quite typical). Here is a
comparison of installed size of the kernel package (configured with
allmodconfig, dwarf4 debuginfo, and module compression turned off)
before and after this patch:

This is a ~92% size reduction.
Note that a debuginfo package can only be produced if the following
configs are set:
- CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO=y
- CONFIG_MODULE_COMPRESS=n
- CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_SPLIT=n
The first of these is obvious - we can't produce debuginfo if the build
does not generate it. The second two requirements can in principle be
removed, but doing so is difficult with the current approach, which uses
a generic rpmbuild script find-debuginfo.sh that processes all packaged
executables. If we want to remove those requirements the best path
forward is likely to add some debuginfo extraction/installation logic to
the modules_install target (controllable by flags). That way, it's
easier to operate on modules before they're compressed, and the logic
can be reused by all packaging targets.

The double slashes ('//') between 'usr' and 'lib' are somewhat ugly.
Let's hardcode the module installation path because the package contents

In ThinPro, we use the convention <upstream_ver>+hp<patchlevel> for
the kernel package. This does not have a dash in the name or version.
This is built by editing ".version" before a build, and setting
EXTRAVERSION="+hp" and KDEB_PKGVERSION make variables:

Since commit 7d4f07d5cb ("kbuild: deb-pkg: squash
scripts/package/deb-build-option to debian/rules"), this no longer
works. The deb build logic changed, even though, the commit message
implies that the logic should be unmodified.
Before, KBUILD_BUILD_VERSION was not set if the KDEB_PKGVERSION did
not contain a dash. After the change KBUILD_BUILD_VERSION is always
set to KDEB_PKGVERSION. Since this determines UTS_VERSION, the uname
output to look off:

Update the debian/rules logic to restore the original behavior.

'man dpkg-deb' describes as follows:
DPKG_DEB_COMPRESSOR_TYPE
Sets the compressor type to use (since dpkg 1.21.10).
The -Z option overrides this value.
When commit 1a7f0a34ea ("builddeb: allow selection of .deb compressor")
was applied, dpkg-deb did not support this environment variable.
Later, dpkg commit c10aeffc6d71 ("dpkg-deb: Add support for
DPKG_DEB_COMPRESSOR_TYPE/LEVEL") introduced support for
DPKG_DEB_COMPRESSOR_TYPE, which provides the same functionality as
KDEB_COMPRESS.
KDEB_COMPRESS is still useful for users of older dpkg versions, but I
would like to remove this redundant functionality in the future.
This commit adds comments to notify users of the planned removal and to
encourage migration to DPKG_DEB_COMPRESSOR_TYPE where possible.

The version number with -rc should be considered older than the final
release.
For example, 6.14-rc1 should be older than 6.14, but to handle this
correctly (just like Debian kernel), "-rc" must be replace with "~rc".

Since commit 5f73e7d038 ("kbuild: refactor cross-compiling
linux-headers package"), the linux-headers pacman package fails
to build when "O=" is set. The build system complains:
/mnt/chroot/linux/scripts/Makefile.build:41: mnt/chroots/linux-mainline/pacman/linux-upstream/pkg/linux-upstream-headers/usr//lib/modules/6.14.0-rc3-00350-g771dba31fffc/build/scripts/Makefile: No such file or directory
This is because the "srcroot" variable is set to "." and the
"build" variable is set to the absolute path. This makes the
"src" variables point to wrong directory.
Change the "build" variable to a relative path to "." to
fix build.

Since commit 5f73e7d038 ("kbuild: refactor cross-compiling
linux-headers package"), the linux-headers Debian package fails to
build when $(CC) cannot build userspace applications, for example,
when using toolchains installed by the 0day bot.
The host programs in the linux-headers package should be rebuilt using
the disto's cross-compiler, ${DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE}-gcc instead of $(CC).
Hence, the variable 'CC' must be expanded in this shell script instead
of in the top-level Makefile.
Commit f354fc88a7 ("kbuild: install-extmod-build: add missing
quotation marks for CC variable") was not a correct fix because
CC="ccache gcc" should be unrelated when rebuilding userspace tools.
