Zecheng LiandPeter Zijlstra 89e1f67186 sched/fair: Remove task_group->se pointer array
Now that struct sched_entity is co-located with struct cfs_rq for non-root task
groups, the task_group->se pointer array is redundant. The associated
sched_entity can be loaded directly from the cfs_rq.

This patch performs the access conversion with the helpers:

 - is_root_task_group(tg): checks if a task group is the root task group. It
   compares the task group's address with the global root_task_group variable.

 - tg_se(tg, cpu): retrieves the cfs_rq and returns the address of the
   co-located se. This function checks if tg is the root task group to ensure
   behaving the same of previous tg->se[cpu]. Replaces all accesses that use
   the tg->se[cpu] pointer array with calls to the new tg_se(tg, cpu) accessor.

 - cfs_rq_se(cfs_rq): simplifies access paths like cfs_rq->tg->se[...] to use
   the co-located sched_entity. This function also checks if tg is the root
   task group to ensure same behavior.

Since tg_se is not in very hot code paths, and the branch is a register
comparison with an immediate value (`&root_task_group`), the performance impact
is expected to be negligible.

Andrea RighiandPeter Zijlstra 4043f54984 sched/deadline: Reject debugfs dl_server writes for offline CPUs
Writing runtime or period via the per-CPU dl_server debugfs files
(/sys/kernel/debug/sched/{fair,ext}_server/cpu*/{runtime,period}) on an
offline CPU can trigger two distinct kernel issues:

1) Divide-by-zero in dl_server_apply_params():

  Both __dl_sub() and __dl_add() divide by cpus internally, which can be
  0 once the CPU has been removed from any active root-domain span (this
  has been latent since the debugfs interface was introduced).

2) WARN_ON_ONCE in dl_server_start():

  WARNING: kernel/sched/deadline.c:1805 at dl_server_start+0x232/0x270

  Commit ee6e44dfe6 ("sched/deadline: Stop dl_server before CPU goes
  offline") added this check to catch enqueueing the server on an
  offline rq.

There's no meaningful semantics for re-configuring the per-CPU dl_server
bandwidth while the CPU is offline, so simply reject the write with
-EBUSY so userspace gets a clear error.

Peter Zijlstra 7755700223 sched: Use {READ,WRITE}_ONCE() for preempt_dynamic_mode
Robots figured out you can read and write this concurrently and got
'upset'. Gemini even noted sched_dynamic_show() can generate
'confusing' output if it observed different values during the
printing.

If build_sched_domains() runs concurrently during CPU hotplug,
it can disable sched_cache_present under sched_domains_mutex
and the CPU hotplug lock. If a debugfs write thread evaluates
sched_cache_present as true right before that, and then blocks
or gets preempted, it might proceed to enable sched_cache_active
after the hardware support has been marked as absent. Make it
safer by acquiring cpus_read_lock() and sched_domains_mutex_lock()
when the user changes sched_cache_active via debugfs.

This bug was reported by sashiko.

Chen YuandPeter Zijlstra c1e7fe5e75 sched/cache: Add user control to adjust the aggressiveness of cache-aware scheduling
Introduce a set of debugfs knobs to control how aggressively the
cache aware scheduling does the task aggregation.

(1) aggr_tolerance
With sched_cache enabled, the scheduler uses a process's footprint
as a proxy for its LLC footprint to determine if aggregating tasks
on the preferred LLC could cause cache contention. If the footprint
exceeds the LLC size, aggregation is skipped. Since the kernel
cannot efficiently track per-task cache usage (resctrl is
user-space only), userspace can provide a more accurate hint.

Introduce /sys/kernel/debug/sched/llc_balancing/aggr_tolerance to
let users control how strictly footprint limits aggregation. Values
range from 0 to 100:
  - 0: Cache-aware scheduling is disabled.
  - 1: Strict; tasks with footprint larger than LLC size are skipped.
  - >=100: Aggressive; tasks are aggregated regardless of footprint.
For example, with a 32MB L3 cache:

  - aggr_tolerance=1 -> tasks with footprint > 32MB are skipped.
  - aggr_tolerance=99 -> tasks with footprint > 784GB are skipped
    (784GB = (1 + (99 - 1) * 256) * 32MB).
Similarly, /sys/kernel/debug/sched/llc_balancing/aggr_tolerance also
controls how strictly the number of active threads is considered when
doing cache aware load balance. The number of SMTs is also considered.
High SMT counts reduce the aggregation capacity, preventing excessive
task aggregation on SMT-heavy systems like Power10/Power11.

Yangyu suggested introducing separate aggregation controls for the
number of active threads and memory footprint checks. Since there are
plans to add per-process/task group controls, fine-grained tunables are
deferred to that implementation.

(2) epoch_period, epoch_affinity_timeout,
    imb_pct, overaggr_pct are also turned into tunables.

Peter Zijlstra e08d007f9d sched/debug: Fix avg_vruntime() usage
John reported that stress-ng-yield could make his machine unhappy and
managed to bisect it to commit b3d99f43c7 ("sched/fair: Fix
zero_vruntime tracking").

The commit in question changes avg_vruntime() from a function that is
a pure reader, to a function that updates variables. This turns an
unlocked sched/debug usage of this function from a minor mistake into
a data corruptor.

Peter Zijlstra 4823725d9d sched/fair: Increase weight bits for avg_vruntime
Due to the zero_vruntime patch, the deltas are now a lot smaller and
measurement with kernel-build and hackbench runs show about 45 bits
used.

This ensures avg_vruntime() tracks the full weight range, reducing
numerical artifacts in reweight and the like.

Also, lets keep the paranoid debug code around fow now.

Peter Zijlstra 5a40a9bb56 sched/debug: Fix dl_server (re)start conditions
There are two problems with sched_server_write_common() that can cause the
dl_server to malfunction upon attempting to change the parameters:

1) when, after having disabled the dl_server by setting runtime=0, it is
   enabled again while tasks are already enqueued. In this case is_active would
   still be 0 and dl_server_start() would not be called.

2) when dl_server_apply_params() would fail, runtime is not applied and does
   not reflect the new state.

Instead have dl_server_start() check its actual dl_runtime, and have
sched_server_write_common() unconditionally (re)start the dl_server. It will
automatically stop if there isn't anything to do, so spurious activation is
harmless -- while failing to start it is a problem.

While there, move the printk out of the locked region and make it symmetric,
also printing on enable.

automatically moved to the sched_ext class. Add support to modify the
ext server parameters similar to how the fair server parameters are

Joel FernandesandPeter Zijlstra 68ec89d0e9 sched/debug: Stop and start server based on if it was active
Currently the DL server interface for applying parameters checks
CFS-internals to identify if the server is active. This is error-prone
and makes it difficult when adding new servers in the future.

Fix it, by using dl_server_active() which is also used by the DL server
code to determine if the DL server was started.

Joel FernandesandPeter Zijlstra 6080fb2116 sched/debug: Fix updating of ppos on server write ops
Updating "ppos" on error conditions does not make much sense. The pattern
is to return the error code directly without modifying the position, or
modify the position on success and return the number of bytes written.

Since on success, the return value of apply is 0, there is no point in
modifying ppos either. Fix it by removing all this and just returning
error code or number of bytes written on success.

Peter Zijlstra 7dadeaa6e8 sched: Further restrict the preemption modes
The introduction of PREEMPT_LAZY was for multiple reasons:

  - PREEMPT_RT suffered from over-scheduling, hurting performance compared to
    !PREEMPT_RT.

  - the introduction of (more) features that rely on preemption; like
    folio_zero_user() which can do large memset() without preemption checks.

    (Xen already had a horrible hack to deal with long running hypercalls)

  - the endless and uncontrolled sprinkling of cond_resched() -- mostly cargo
    cult or in response to poor to replicate workloads.

By moving to a model that is fundamentally preemptable these things become
managable and avoid needing to introduce more horrible hacks.

Since this is a requirement; limit PREEMPT_NONE to architectures that do not
support preemption at all. Further limit PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY to those
architectures that do not yet have PREEMPT_LAZY support (with the eventual goal
to make this the empty set and completely remove voluntary preemption and
cond_resched() -- notably VOLUNTARY is already limited to !ARCH_NO_PREEMPT.)

This leaves up-to-date architectures (arm64, loongarch, powerpc, riscv, s390,
x86) with only two preemption models: full and lazy.

While Lazy has been the recommended setting for a while, not all distributions
have managed to make the switch yet. Force things along. Keep the patch minimal
in case of hard to address regressions that might pop up.

Peter Zijlstra 79f3f9bedd sched/eevdf: Fix min_vruntime vs avg_vruntime
Basically, from the constraint that the sum of lag is zero, you can
infer that the 0-lag point is the weighted average of the individual
vruntime, which is what we're trying to compute:

        \Sum w_i * v_i
  avg = --------------
           \Sum w_i

Now, since vruntime takes the whole u64 (worse, it wraps), this
multiplication term in the numerator is not something we can compute;
instead we do the min_vruntime (v0 henceforth) thing like:

  v_i = (v_i - v0) + v0

This does two things:
 - it keeps the key: (v_i - v0) 'small';
 - it creates a relative 0-point in the modular space.

If you do that subtitution and work it all out, you end up with:

        \Sum w_i * (v_i - v0)
  avg = --------------------- + v0
              \Sum w_i

Since you cannot very well track a ratio like that (and not suffer
terrible numerical problems) we simpy track the numerator and
denominator individually and only perform the division when strictly
needed.

Notably, the numerator lives in cfs_rq->avg_vruntime and the denominator
lives in cfs_rq->avg_load.

The one extra 'funny' is that these numbers track the entities in the
tree, and current is typically outside of the tree, so avg_vruntime()
adds current when needed before doing the division.

(vruntime_eligible() elides the division by cross-wise multiplication)

Anyway, as mentioned above, we currently use the CFS era min_vruntime
for this purpose. However, this thing can only move forward, while the
above avg can in fact move backward (when a non-eligible task leaves,
the average becomes smaller), this can cause trouble when through
happenstance (or construction) these values drift far enough apart to
wreck the game.

Replace cfs_rq::min_vruntime with cfs_rq::zero_vruntime which is kept
near/at avg_vruntime, following its motion.

The down-side is that this requires computing the avg more often.

Juri LelliandPeter Zijlstra bb4700adc3 sched/deadline: Always stop dl-server before changing parameters
Commit cccb45d7c4 ("sched/deadline: Less agressive dl_server
handling") reduced dl-server overhead by delaying disabling servers only
after there are no fair task around for a whole period, which means that
deadline entities are not dequeued right away on a server stop event.
However, the delay opens up a window in which a request for changing
server parameters can break per-runqueue running_bw tracking, as
reported by Yuri.

Close the problematic window by unconditionally calling dl_server_stop()
before applying the new parameters (ensuring deadline entities go
through an actual dequeue).

This commit introduces per-memcg/task NUMA balance statistics, but
unfortunately it introduced a NULL pointer exception due to the following
race condition: After a swap task candidate was chosen, its mm_struct
pointer was set to NULL due to task exit.  Later, when performing the
actual task swapping, the p->mm caused the problem.

task_lock() should be held and the PF_EXITING flag needs to be checked to

Ingo Molnar cac5cefbad sched/smp: Make SMP unconditional
Simplify the scheduler by making CONFIG_SMP=y primitives and data
structures unconditional.

Introduce transitory wrappers for functionality not yet converted to SMP.

Note that this patch is pretty large, because there's no clear separation
between various aspects of the SMP scheduler, it's basically a huge block
of #ifdef CONFIG_SMP. A fair amount of it has to be switched on for it to
boot and work on UP systems.

Peter Zijlstra 3d7e10188a sched: Make clangd usable
Due to the weird Makefile setup of sched the various files do not
compile as stand alone units. The new generation of editors are trying
to do just this -- mostly to offer fancy things like completions but
also better syntax highlighting and code navigation.

Specifically, I've been playing around with neovim and clangd.

Setting up clangd on the kernel source is a giant pain in the arse
(this really should be improved), but once you do manage, you run into
dumb stuff like the above.

Fix up the scheduler files to at least pretend to work.
