Thomas HellströmandRodrigo Vivi b570f37a2c mm: Fix a hmm_range_fault() livelock / starvation problem
If hmm_range_fault() fails a folio_trylock() in do_swap_page,
trying to acquire the lock of a device-private folio for migration,
to ram, the function will spin until it succeeds grabbing the lock.

However, if the process holding the lock is depending on a work
item to be completed, which is scheduled on the same CPU as the
spinning hmm_range_fault(), that work item might be starved and
we end up in a livelock / starvation situation which is never
resolved.

This can happen, for example if the process holding the
device-private folio lock is stuck in
   migrate_device_unmap()->lru_add_drain_all()
sinc lru_add_drain_all() requires a short work-item
to be run on all online cpus to complete.

A prerequisite for this to happen is:
a) Both zone device and system memory folios are considered in
   migrate_device_unmap(), so that there is a reason to call
   lru_add_drain_all() for a system memory folio while a
   folio lock is held on a zone device folio.
b) The zone device folio has an initial mapcount > 1 which causes
   at least one migration PTE entry insertion to be deferred to
   try_to_migrate(), which can happen after the call to
   lru_add_drain_all().
c) No or voluntary only preemption.

This all seems pretty unlikely to happen, but indeed is hit by
the "xe_exec_system_allocator" igt test.

Resolve this by waiting for the folio to be unlocked if the
folio_trylock() fails in do_swap_page().

Rename migration_entry_wait_on_locked() to
softleaf_entry_wait_unlock() and update its documentation to
indicate the new use-case.

Future code improvements might consider moving
the lru_add_drain_all() call in migrate_device_unmap() to be
called *after* all pages have migration entries inserted.
That would eliminate also b) above.

v2:
- Instead of a cond_resched() in hmm_range_fault(),
  eliminate the problem by waiting for the folio to be unlocked
  in do_swap_page() (Alistair Popple, Andrew Morton)
v3:
- Add a stub migration_entry_wait_on_locked() for the
  !CONFIG_MIGRATION case. (Kernel Test Robot)
v4:
- Rename migrate_entry_wait_on_locked() to
  softleaf_entry_wait_on_locked() and update docs (Alistair Popple)
v5:
- Add a WARN_ON_ONCE() for the !CONFIG_MIGRATION
  version of softleaf_entry_wait_on_locked().
- Modify wording around function names in the commit message
  (Andrew Morton)

Lorenzo StoakesandAndrew Morton 0ac881efe1 mm: replace pmd_to_swp_entry() with softleaf_from_pmd()
Introduce softleaf_from_pmd() to do the equivalent operation for PMDs that
softleaf_from_pte() fulfils, and cascade changes through code base
accordingly, introducing helpers as necessary.

We are then able to eliminate pmd_to_swp_entry(),
is_pmd_migration_entry(), is_pmd_device_private_entry() and
is_pmd_non_present_folio_entry().

This further establishes the use of leaf operations throughout the code
base and further establishes the foundations for eliminating
is_swap_pmd().

No functional change intended.

Balbir SinghandAndrew Morton a30b48bf1b mm/migrate_device: implement THP migration of zone device pages
MIGRATE_VMA_SELECT_COMPOUND will be used to select THP pages during
migrate_vma_setup() and MIGRATE_PFN_COMPOUND will make migrating device
pages as compound pages during device pfn migration.

migrate_device code paths go through the collect, setup and finalize
phases of migration.

The entries in src and dst arrays passed to these functions still remain
at a PAGE_SIZE granularity. When a compound page is passed, the first
entry has the PFN along with MIGRATE_PFN_COMPOUND and other flags set
(MIGRATE_PFN_MIGRATE, MIGRATE_PFN_VALID), the remaining entries
(HPAGE_PMD_NR - 1) are filled with 0's. This representation allows for
the compound page to be split into smaller page sizes.

migrate_vma_collect_hole(), migrate_vma_collect_pmd() are now THP page
aware. Two new helper functions migrate_vma_collect_huge_pmd() and
migrate_vma_insert_huge_pmd_page() have been added.

migrate_vma_collect_huge_pmd() can collect THP pages, but if for some
reason this fails, there is fallback support to split the folio and
migrate it.

migrate_vma_insert_huge_pmd_page() closely follows the logic of
migrate_vma_insert_page()

Support for splitting pages as needed for migration will follow in later
patches in this series.

David HildenbrandandAndrew Morton fb49a4425c treewide: remove MIGRATEPAGE_SUCCESS
At this point MIGRATEPAGE_SUCCESS is misnamed for all folio users,
and now that we remove MIGRATEPAGE_UNMAP, it's really the only "success"
return value that the code uses and expects.

Let's just get rid of MIGRATEPAGE_SUCCESS completely and just use "0"
for success.

David HildenbrandandAndrew Morton 95c2908f1a mm/migrate: remove MIGRATEPAGE_UNMAP
migrate_folio_unmap() is the only user of MIGRATEPAGE_UNMAP. We want to
remove MIGRATEPAGE_* completely.

It's rather weird to have a generic MIGRATEPAGE_UNMAP, documented to be
returned from address-space callbacks, when it's only used for an internal
helper.

Let's start by having only a single "success" return value for
migrate_folio_unmap() -- 0 -- by moving the "folio was already freed"
check into the single caller.

There is a remaining comment for PG_isolated, which we renamed to
PG_movable_ops_isolated recently and forgot to update.

While we might still run into that case with zsmalloc, it's something we
want to get rid of soon. So let's just focus that optimization on real
folios only for now by excluding movable_ops pages. Note that concurrent
freeing can happen at any time and this "already freed" check is not
relevant for correctness.

The reason is that defined(CONFIG_ZSMALLOC) evaluates to 1 only when
CONFIG_ZSMALLOC=y, we should use IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_ZSMALLOC) instead. But
when I use IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_ZSMALLOC), page_movable_ops() cannot access
zsmalloc_mops because zsmalloc_mops is in a module.

To solve this problem, we define a set_movable_ops() interface to register
and unregister offline_movable_ops / zsmalloc_movable_ops in mm/migrate.c,
and call them at mm/balloon_compaction.c & mm/zsmalloc.c. Since
offline_movable_ops / zsmalloc_movable_ops are always accessible, all
#ifdef / #endif are removed in page_movable_ops().

David HildenbrandandAndrew Morton 3d388584d5 mm: convert "movable" flag in page->mapping to a page flag
Instead, let's use a page flag. As the page flag can result in
false-positives, glue it to the page types for which we support/implement
movable_ops page migration.

We are reusing PG_uptodate, that is for example used to track file system
state and does not apply to movable_ops pages. So warning in case it is
set in page_has_movable_ops() on other page types could result in
false-positive warnings.

Likely we could set the bit using a non-atomic update: in contrast to
page->mapping, we could have others trying to update the flags
concurrently when trying to lock the folio. In
isolate_movable_ops_page(), we already take care of that by checking if
the page has movable_ops before locking it. Let's start with the atomic
variant, we could later switch to the non-atomic variant once we are sure
other cases are similarly fine. Once we perform the switch, we'll have to
introduce __SETPAGEFLAG_NOOP().

David HildenbrandandAndrew Morton 84caf98838 mm: stop storing migration_ops in page->mapping
... instead, look them up statically based on the page type. Maybe in
the future we want a registration interface? At least for now, it can be
easily handled using the two page types that actually support page
migration.

The remaining usage of page->mapping is to flag such pages as actually
being movable (having movable_ops), which we will change next.

David HildenbrandandAndrew Morton 22d103aef0 mm/migration: remove PageMovable()
Previously, if __ClearPageMovable() were invoked on a page, this would
cause __PageMovable() to return false, but due to the continued existence
of page movable ops, PageMovable() would have returned true.

With __ClearPageMovable() gone, the two are exactly equivalent.

So we can replace PageMovable() checks by __PageMovable(). In fact,
__PageMovable() cannot change until a page is freed, so we can turn some
PageMovable() into sanity checks for __PageMovable().

... and start moving back to per-page things that will absolutely not be
folio things in the future. Add documentation and a comment that the
remaining folio stuff (lock, refcount) will have to be reworked as well.

While at it, convert the VM_BUG_ON() into a WARN_ON_ONCE() and handle it
gracefully (relevant with further changes), and convert a WARN_ON_ONCE()
into a VM_WARN_ON_ONCE_PAGE().

Note that we will leave anything that needs a rework (lock, refcount,
->lru) to be using folios for now: that perfectly highlights the
problematic bits.

Linus Torvalds eb0ece1602 Merge tag 'mm-stable-2025-03-30-16-52' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm
Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton:

 - The series "Enable strict percpu address space checks" from Uros
   Bizjak uses x86 named address space qualifiers to provide
   compile-time checking of percpu area accesses.

   This has caused a small amount of fallout - two or three issues were
   reported. In all cases the calling code was found to be incorrect.

 - The series "Some cleanup for memcg" from Chen Ridong implements some
   relatively monir cleanups for the memcontrol code.

 - The series "mm: fixes for device-exclusive entries (hmm)" from David
   Hildenbrand fixes a boatload of issues which David found then using
   device-exclusive PTE entries when THP is enabled. More work is
   needed, but this makes thins better - our own HMM selftests now
   succeed.

 - The series "mm: zswap: remove z3fold and zbud" from Yosry Ahmed
   remove the z3fold and zbud implementations. They have been deprecated
   for half a year and nobody has complained.

 - The series "mm: further simplify VMA merge operation" from Lorenzo
   Stoakes implements numerous simplifications in this area. No runtime
   effects are anticipated.

 - The series "mm/madvise: remove redundant mmap_lock operations from
   process_madvise()" from SeongJae Park rationalizes the locking in the
   madvise() implementation. Performance gains of 20-25% were observed
   in one MADV_DONTNEED microbenchmark.

 - The series "Tiny cleanup and improvements about SWAP code" from
   Baoquan He contains a number of touchups to issues which Baoquan
   noticed when working on the swap code.

 - The series "mm: kmemleak: Usability improvements" from Catalin
   Marinas implements a couple of improvements to the kmemleak
   user-visible output.

 - The series "mm/damon/paddr: fix large folios access and schemes
   handling" from Usama Arif provides a couple of fixes for DAMON's
   handling of large folios.

 - The series "mm/damon/core: fix wrong and/or useless damos_walk()
   behaviors" from SeongJae Park fixes a few issues with the accuracy of
   kdamond's walking of DAMON regions.

 - The series "expose mapping wrprotect, fix fb_defio use" from Lorenzo
   Stoakes changes the interaction between framebuffer deferred-io and
   core MM. No functional changes are anticipated - this is preparatory
   work for the future removal of page structure fields.

 - The series "mm/damon: add support for hugepage_size DAMOS filter"
   from Usama Arif adds a DAMOS filter which permits the filtering by
   huge page sizes.

 - The series "mm: permit guard regions for file-backed/shmem mappings"
   from Lorenzo Stoakes extends the guard region feature from its
   present "anon mappings only" state. The feature now covers shmem and
   file-backed mappings.

 - The series "mm: batched unmap lazyfree large folios during
   reclamation" from Barry Song cleans up and speeds up the unmapping
   for pte-mapped large folios.

 - The series "reimplement per-vma lock as a refcount" from Suren
   Baghdasaryan puts the vm_lock back into the vma. Our reasons for
   pulling it out were largely bogus and that change made the code more
   messy. This patchset provides small (0-10%) improvements on one
   microbenchmark.

 - The series "Docs/mm/damon: misc DAMOS filters documentation fixes and
   improves" from SeongJae Park does some maintenance work on the DAMON
   docs.

 - The series "hugetlb/CMA improvements for large systems" from Frank
   van der Linden addresses a pile of issues which have been observed
   when using CMA on large machines.

 - The series "mm/damon: introduce DAMOS filter type for unmapped pages"
   from SeongJae Park enables users of DMAON/DAMOS to filter my the

Alistair PoppleandAndrew Morton 82ba975e4c mm: allow compound zone device pages
Zone device pages are used to represent various type of device memory
managed by device drivers. Currently compound zone device pages are not
supported. This is because MEMORY_DEVICE_FS_DAX pages are the only user
of higher order zone device pages and have their own page reference
counting.

A future change will unify FS DAX reference counting with normal page
reference counting rules and remove the special FS DAX reference counting.
Supporting that requires compound zone device pages.

Supporting compound zone device pages requires compound_head() to
distinguish between head and tail pages whilst still preserving the
special struct page fields that are specific to zone device pages.

A tail page is distinguished by having bit zero being set in
page->compound_head, with the remaining bits pointing to the head page.
For zone device pages page->compound_head is shared with page->pgmap.

The page->pgmap field must be common to all pages within a folio, even if
the folio spans memory sections. Therefore pgmap is the same for both
head and tail pages and can be moved into the folio and we can use the
standard scheme to find compound_head from a tail page.

David HildenbrandandAndrew Morton ee86814b05 mm/migrate: move NUMA hinting fault folio isolation + checks under PTL
Currently we always take a folio reference even if migration will not even
be tried or isolation failed, requiring us to grab+drop an additional
reference.

Further, we end up calling folio_likely_mapped_shared() while the folio
might have already been unmapped, because after we dropped the PTL, that
can easily happen. We want to stop touching mapcounts and friends from
such context, and only call folio_likely_mapped_shared() while the folio
is still mapped: mapcount information is pretty much stale and unreliable
otherwise.

So let's move checks into numamigrate_isolate_folio(), rename that
function to migrate_misplaced_folio_prepare(), and call that function from
callsites where we call migrate_misplaced_folio(), but still with the PTL
held.

We can now stop taking temporary folio references, and really only take a
reference if folio isolation succeeded. Doing the
folio_likely_mapped_shared() + folio isolation under PT lock is now
similar to how we handle MADV_PAGEOUT.

While at it, combine the folio_is_file_lru() checks.
