Eric Biggers 9665e22579 lib/crypto: docs: Improve introduction sentence
Make it clear that lib/crypto/ is a kernel-internal library.  It's easy
for people to come across this page, especially the HTML version online,
without that context.

Demi Marie ObenourandHerbert Xu 5624ea54f3 crypto: af_alg - Document that it is *always* slower
Without support for zero-copy or off-CPU offloads, AF_ALG is always
slower than software cryptography. Its only advantage is that it might
save code size. However, this is largely mitigated by lightweight
userspace cryptographic libraries.

Demi Marie ObenourandHerbert Xu 7524070f26 crypto: af_alg - Drop support for off-CPU cryptography
AF_ALG is deprecated and exposed to unprivileged userspace.  Only
use the least buggy algorithm implementations: the pure software ones.

This removes one of the main advantages of AF_ALG, which is the
ability to use it with off-CPU accelerators.  However, using off-CPU
accelerators has huge overheads, both in performance and attack surface.
I have yet to see real-world, performance-critical workloads where using
an accelerator via AF_ALG is actually a win over doing cryptography in
userspace.

If using an off-CPU accelerator really does turn out to be a win, a new
API should be developed that is actually a good fit for it.

Change the krb5 crypto library to provide facilities to precheck the length
of the message about to be decrypted or verified.

Fix AF_RXRPC to make use of this to validate DATA packets secured with

Eric BiggersandHerbert Xu ffdd2bc378 crypto: af_alg - Remove zero-copy support from skcipher and aead
The zero-copy support is one of the riskiest aspects of AF_ALG.  It
allows userspace to request cryptographic operations directly on
pagecache pages of files like the 'su' binary.  It also allows userspace
to concurrently modify the memory which is being operated on, a recipe
for TOCTOU vulnerabilities.

While zero-copy support is more valuable in other areas of the kernel
like the frequently used networking and file I/O code, it has far less
value in AF_ALG, which is a niche UAPI.  AF_ALG primarily just exists
for backwards compatibility with a small set of userspace programs such
as 'iwd' that haven't yet been fixed to use userspace crypto code.

Originally AF_ALG was intended to be used to access hardware crypto
accelerators.  However, it isn't an efficient interface for that anyway,
and it turned out to be rarely used in this way in practice.

Thus, the risks of the zero-copy support in AF_ALG vastly outweigh its
benefits.  Let's just remove it.

This commit removes it from the "skcipher" and "aead" algorithm types.
"hash" will be handled separately.

This is a soft break, not a hard break.  Even after this commit, it
still works to use splice() or sendfile() to transfer data to an AF_ALG
request socket from a pipe or any file, respectively.  What changes is
just that the kernel now makes an internal, stable copy of the data
before doing the crypto operation.  So performance is slightly reduced,
but the UAPI isn't broken.  And, very importantly, it's much safer.

Tested with libkcapi/test.sh.  All its test cases still pass.  I also
verified that this would have prevented the copy.fail exploit as well.
I also used a custom test program to verify that sendfile() still works.

Eric BiggersandHerbert Xu a67afb1884 crypto: af_alg - Document the deprecation of AF_ALG
AF_ALG is almost completely unnecessary, and it exposes a massive attack
surface that hasn't been standing up to modern vulnerability discovery
tools.  The latest one even has its own website, providing a small
Python script that reliably roots most Linux distros: https://copy.fail/

This isn't sustainable, especially as LLMs have accelerated the rate the
vulnerabilities are coming in.  The effort that is being put into this
thing is vastly disproportional to the few programs that actually use
it, and those programs would be better served by userspace code anyway.

These issues have been noted in many mailing list discussions already.
But until now they haven't been reflected in the documentation or
kconfig menu itself, and the vulnerabilities are still coming in.

Let's go ahead and document the deprecation.

This isn't intended to change anything overnight.  After all, most Linux
distros won't be able to disable the kconfig options quite yet, mainly
because of iwd.  But this should create a bit more impetus for these
userspace programs to be fixed, and the documentation update should also
help prevent more users from appearing.

Eric BiggersandHerbert Xu e227be3ffd crypto: drbg - Remove support for HASH_DRBG
Remove the support for HASH_DRBG.  It's likely unused code, seeing as
HMAC_DRBG is always enabled and prioritized over it unless
NETLINK_CRYPTO is used to change the algorithm priorities.

There's also no compelling reason to support more than one of
[HMAC_DRBG, HASH_DRBG, CTR_DRBG].  By definition, callers cannot tell
any difference in their outputs.  And all are FIPS-certifiable, which is
the only point of the kernel's NIST DRBGs anyway.

Switching to HASH_DRBG doesn't seem all that compelling, either.  For
one, it's more complex than HMAC_DRBG.

Thus, let's just drop HASH_DRBG support and focus on HMAC_DRBG.

Eric Biggers e9af4f47d4 lib/crypto: docs: Add rst documentation to Documentation/crypto/
Add a documentation file Documentation/crypto/libcrypto.rst which
provides a high-level overview of lib/crypto/.

Also add several sub-pages which include the kernel-doc for the
algorithms that have it.  This makes the existing, quite extensive
kernel-doc start being included in the HTML and PDF documentation.

Note that the intent is very much *not* that everyone has to read these
Documentation/ files.  The library is intended to be straightforward and
use familiar conventions; generally it should be possible to dive right
into the kernel-doc.  You shouldn't need to read a lot of documentation
to just call `sha256()`, for example, or to run the unit tests if you're
already familiar with KUnit.  (This differs from the traditional crypto
API which has a larger barrier to entry.)

Nevertheless, this seems worth adding.  Hopefully it is useful and makes
LWN no longer consider the library to be "meticulously undocumented".

Eric BiggersandHerbert Xu c7dcb041ce crypto: ansi_cprng - Remove unused ansi_cprng algorithm
Remove ansi_cprng, since it's obsolete and unused, as confirmed at
https://lore.kernel.org/r/aQxpnckYMgAAOLpZ@gondor.apana.org.au/

This was originally added in 2008, apparently as a FIPS approved random
number generator.  Whether this has ever belonged upstream is
questionable.  Either way, ansi_cprng is no longer usable for this
purpose, since it's been superseded by the more modern algorithms in
crypto/drbg.c, and FIPS itself no longer allows it.  (NIST SP 800-131A
Rev 1 (2015) says that RNGs based on ANSI X9.31 will be disallowed after
2015.  NIST SP 800-131A Rev 2 (2019) confirms they are now disallowed.)

Therefore, there is no reason to keep it around.

Add a SHA3 kunit test suite, providing the following:

 (*) A simple test of each of SHA3-224, SHA3-256, SHA3-384, SHA3-512,
     SHAKE128 and SHAKE256.

 (*) NIST 0- and 1600-bit test vectors for SHAKE128 and SHAKE256.

 (*) Output tiling (multiple squeezing) tests for SHAKE256.

 (*) Standard hash template test for SHA3-256.  To make this possible,
     gen-hash-testvecs.py is modified to support sha3-256.

 (*) Standard benchmark test for SHA3-256.

     addition of Testing section in doc file into this commit, and
     other small cleanups]

David HowellsandEric Biggers 0593447248 lib/crypto: sha3: Add SHA-3 support
Add SHA-3 support to lib/crypto/.  All six algorithms in the SHA-3
family are supported: four digests (SHA3-224, SHA3-256, SHA3-384, and
SHA3-512) and two extendable-output functions (SHAKE128 and SHAKE256).

The SHAKE algorithms will be required for ML-DSA.

[EB: simplified the API to use fewer types and functions, fixed bug that

Ovidiu PanaitandHerbert Xu 5eb32430df crypto: engine - remove {prepare,unprepare}_crypt_hardware callbacks
The {prepare,unprepare}_crypt_hardware callbacks were added back in 2016
by commit 735d37b542 ("crypto: engine - Introduce the block request
crypto engine framework"), but they were never implemented by any driver.
Remove them as they are unused.

Since the 'engine->idling' and 'was_busy' flags are no longer needed,
remove them as well.

Ard BiesheuvelandHerbert Xu fce8b8d598 crypto: remove obsolete 'comp' compression API
The 'comp' compression API has been superseded by the acomp API, which
is a bit more cumbersome to use, but ultimately more flexible when it
comes to hardware implementations.

Now that all the users and implementations have been removed, let's
remove the core plumbing of the 'comp' API as well.

Lukas WunnerandHerbert Xu a2471684da crypto: ecdsa - Move X9.62 signature size calculation into template
software_key_query() returns the maximum signature and digest size for a
given key to user space.  When it only supported RSA keys, calculating
those sizes was trivial as they were always equivalent to the key size.

However when ECDSA was added, the function grew somewhat complicated
calculations which take the ASN.1 encoding and curve into account.
This doesn't scale well and adjusting the calculations is easily
forgotten when adding support for new encodings or curves.  In fact,
when NIST P521 support was recently added, the function was initially
not amended:

Introduce a ->max_size() callback to struct sig_alg and take advantage
of it to move the signature size calculations to ecdsa-x962.c.

Introduce a ->digest_size() callback to struct sig_alg and move the
maximum ECDSA digest size to ecdsa.c.  It is common across ecdsa-x962.c
and the upcoming ecdsa-p1363.c and thus inherited by both of them.

For all other algorithms, continue using the key size as maximum
signature and digest size.

Lukas WunnerandHerbert Xu 221f00418e crypto: sig - Rename crypto_sig_maxsize() to crypto_sig_keysize()
crypto_sig_maxsize() is a bit of a misnomer as it doesn't return the
maximum signature size, but rather the key size.

Rename it as well as all implementations of the ->max_size callback.
A subsequent commit introduces a crypto_sig_maxsize() function which
returns the actual maximum signature size.

While at it, change the return type of crypto_sig_keysize() from int to
unsigned int for consistency with crypto_akcipher_maxsize().  None of
the callers checks for a negative return value and an error condition
can always be indicated by returning zero.
