Arnaldo Carvalho de MeloandNamhyung Kim fbfb858552 perf tools: Use calloc() where applicable
Instead of using zalloc(nr_entries * sizeof_entry) that is what calloc()
does.

In some places where linux/zalloc.h isn't needed, remove it, add when
needed and was getting it indirectly.

Ian RogersandNamhyung Kim ad5ceacd48 perf sample: Make sure perf_sample__init/exit are used
The deferred stack trace code wasn't using perf_sample__init/exit. Add
the deferred stack trace clean up to perf_sample__exit which requires
proper NULL initialization in perf_sample__init. Make the
perf_sample__exit robust to being called more than once by using
zfree. Make the error paths in evsel__parse_sample exit the
sample. Add a merged_callchain boolean to capture that callchain is
allocated, deferred_callchain doen't suffice for this. Pack the struct
variables to avoid padding bytes for this.

Similiarly powerpc_vpadtl_sample wasn't using perf_sample__init/exit,
use it for consistency and potential issues with uninitialized
variables.

Similarly guest_session__inject_events in builtin-inject wasn't using
perf_sample_init/exit. The lifetime management for fetched events is
somewhat complex there, but when an event is fetched the sample should
be initialized and needs exiting on error. The sample may be left in
place so that future injects have access to it.

Ian RogersandNamhyung Kim ca76fb67eb perf evlist: Improve default event for s390
Frame pointer callchains are not supported on s390 and dwarf
callchains are only supported on software events.

Switch the default event from the hardware 'cycles' event to the
software 'cpu-clock' or 'task-clock' on s390 if callchains are
enabled. Move some of the target initialization earlier in builtin-top
and builtin-record, so it is ready for use by evlist__new_default.

If frame pointer callchains are requested on s390 show a
warning. Modify the '-g' option of `perf top` and `perf record` to
default to dwarf callchains on s390.

Ian RogersandArnaldo Carvalho de Melo 5d1ab659fb perf stat: Add no-affinity flag
Add flag that disables affinity behavior.

Using sched_setaffinity() to place a perf thread on a CPU can avoid
certain interprocessor interrupts but may introduce a delay due to the
scheduling, particularly on loaded machines.

Add a command line option to disable the behavior.

This behavior is less present in other tools like `perf record`, as it
uses a ring buffer and doesn't make repeated system calls.

Ian RogersandArnaldo Carvalho de Melo d484361550 perf evlist: Reduce affinity use and move into iterator, fix no affinity
The evlist__for_each_cpu iterator will call sched_setaffitinity when
moving between CPUs to avoid IPIs.

If only 1 IPI is saved then this may be unprofitable as the delay to get
scheduled may be considerable.

This may be particularly true if reading an event group in `perf stat`
in interval mode.

Move the affinity handling completely into the iterator so that a single
evlist__use_affinity can determine whether CPU affinities will be used.

For `perf record` the change is minimal as the dummy event and the real
event will always make the use of affinities the thing to do.

In `perf stat`, tool events are ignored and affinities only used if >1
event on the same CPU occur.

Determining if affinities are useful is done by evlist__use_affinity
which tests per-event whether the event's PMU benefits from affinity use
- it is assumed only perf event using PMUs do.

Fix a bug where when there are no affinities that the CPU map iterator
may reference a CPU not present in the initial evsel. Fix by making the
iterator and non-iterator code common.

Ian RogersandArnaldo Carvalho de Melo bac74dcbd4 perf tools: Switch printf("...%s", strerror(errno)) to printf("...%m")
strerror() has thread safety issues, strerror_r() requires stack

Expand the usage of this formatting flag and remove usage of

Ian RogersandArnaldo Carvalho de Melo 7d45f402d3 perf evlist: Make uniquifying counter names consistent
'perf stat' has different uniquification logic to 'perf record' and perf
top. In the case of perf record and 'perf top' all hybrid event names
are uniquified.

'perf stat' is more disciplined respecting name config terms, libpfm4
events, etc.

'perf stat' will uniquify hybrid events and the non-core PMU cases
shouldn't apply to perf record or 'perf top'.

For consistency, remove the uniquification for 'perf record' and 'perf
top' and reuse the 'perf stat' uniquification, making the code more
globally visible for this.

Fix the detection of cross-PMU for disabling uniquify by correctly
setting last_pmu.

When setting uniquify on an evsel, make sure the PMUs between the 2
considered events differ otherwise the uniquify isn't adding value.

evsel names and metric-ids are used for matching but this can be
problematic, for example, multiple occurrences of the same retirement
latency event become a single event for the record.

Change the name of the record events so they are unique and reflect the
evsel of the retirement latency event that opens them (the retirement
latency event's evsel address is embedded within them).

This allows an evsel based close to close the event when the retirement
latency event is closed.

This is important as 'perf stat' has an evlist and the session listen to
the record events has an evlist, knowing which event should remove the
tpebs_retire_lat can't be tied to an evlist list as there is more than
1, so closing which evlist should cause the tpebs to stop?

Using the evsel and the last one out doing the tpebs_stop is cleaner.

Ian RogersandNamhyung Kim 58b8b5d142 perf cpumap: Increment reference count for online cpumap
Thomas Richter <tmricht@linux.ibm.com> reported a double put on the
cpumap for the placeholder core PMU:
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20250318095132.1502654-3-tmricht@linux.ibm.com/
Requiring the caller to get the cpumap is not how these things are
usually done, switch cpu_map__online to do the get and then fix up any
use cases where a put is needed.

Namhyung Kim 7788ad59d1 perf tools: Skip BPF sideband event for userspace profiling
The BPF sideband information is tracked using a separate thread and
evlist. But it's only useful for profiling kernel and we can skip it
when users profile their application only.

It seems it already fails to open the sideband event in that case.
Let's remove the noise in the verbose output anyway.

"evsel->pmu_name" is only ever assigned a strdup of "pmu->name", a

Ian RogersandNamhyung Kim d38461e977 perf stat: Remove evlist__add_default_attrs use strings
add_default_atttributes would add evsels by having pre-created
perf_event_attr, however, this needed fixing for hybrid as the
extended PMU type was necessary for each core PMU. The logic for this
was in an arch specific x86 function and wasn't present for ARM,
meaning that default events weren't being opened on all PMUs on
ARM. Change the creation of the default events to use parse_events and
strings as that will open the events on all PMUs.

Rather than try to detect events on PMUs before parsing, parse the
event but skip its output in stat-display.

The previous order of hardware events was: cycles,
stalled-cycles-frontend, stalled-cycles-backend, instructions. As
instructions is a more fundamental concept the order is changed to:
instructions, cycles, stalled-cycles-frontend, stalled-cycles-backend.
