Zhang CenandJakub Kicinski c367b90821 netpoll: normalize skb->dev to the netpoll device
__netpoll_send_skb() always transmits through np->dev and queues busy
packets on np->dev->npinfo->txq, but it leaves skb->dev unchanged.
Stacked callers such as DSA and macvlan can reach netpoll with skb->dev
still naming the upper device while np->dev is the lower device that
owns the netpoll state.

If the skb has to be deferred, queue_process() later dequeues it from
the lower device's txq but retries it through skb->dev. That can
re-enter the upper ndo_start_xmit path on an already transformed skb,
and if the upper device disappears before the lower txq drains the
workqueue can dereference a stale skb->dev pointer.

The buggy scenario involves two paths, with each column showing the
order within that path:

path A label: netpoll enqueue path   path B label: upper-device teardown
1. Stacked xmit calls netpoll        1. Teardown unregisters the upper
   with lower np->dev and upper         net_device while lower npinfo
   skb->dev.                            stays alive.
2. __netpoll_send_skb() uses         2. netdev_release() runs for the

Breno LeitaoandJakub Kicinski 76b93a8107 netpoll: pass buffer size to egress_dev() to avoid MAC truncation
egress_dev() formats np->dev_mac via snprintf() but receives buf as
a bare char *, so it cannot derive the buffer size from the pointer. The
size argument was hardcoded to MAC_ADDR_STR_LEN (3 * ETH_ALEN - 1 = 17),
which is silly wrong in two ways:

 1) misleading kernel log output on the MAC-selected target path
    (np->dev_name[0] == '\0'); for example "aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff doesn't
    exist, aborting" was logged as "aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:f doesn't exist,
    aborting".

 2) the second argument of snprintf is the size of the buffer, not the
    size of what you want to write.

Add a bufsz parameter to egress_dev() and pass sizeof(buf) from each
caller, matching the standard snprintf() idiom and removing the
hardcoded size from the helper.

Every caller already declares "char buf[MAC_ADDR_STR_LEN + 1]" so the
formatted MAC continues to fit.

Tested by booting with
  netconsole=6665@/aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff,6666@10.0.0.1/00:11:22:33:44:55
on a kernel without a matching device. Pre-fix dmesg shows
"aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:f doesn't exist, aborting"; post-fix shows the full
"aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff doesn't exist, aborting".

Breno LeitaoandJakub Kicinski 3bc179bc71 netpoll: fix IPv6 local-address corruption
netpoll_setup() decides whether to auto-populate the local source
address by testing np->local_ip.ip, which only inspects the first 4
bytes of the union inet_addr storage.

For an IPv6 netpoll whose caller-supplied local address has a zero
high-32 bits (::1, ::<suffix>, IPv4-mapped ::ffff:a.b.c.d, etc.), this
misdetects the address as unset (which they are not, but the first
4 bytes are empty), calls netpoll_take_ipv6() and overwrites it with
whatever matching link-local/global address the device happens to expose
first.

Introduce a helper netpoll_local_ip_unset() that picks the correct
family-aware test (ipv6_addr_any() for IPv6, !.ip for IPv4) and use it
from netpoll_setup().

Reproducer is something like:

  cat local_ip
  # before this fix: 2001:db8::1   (caller-supplied ::2 was clobbered)

Sebastian Andrzej SiewiorandPaolo Abeni b824c3e16c net: Provide a PREEMPT_RT specific check for netdev_queue::_xmit_lock
After acquiring netdev_queue::_xmit_lock the number of the CPU owning
the lock is recorded in netdev_queue::xmit_lock_owner. This works as
long as the BH context is not preemptible.

On PREEMPT_RT the softirq context is preemptible and without the
softirq-lock it is possible to have multiple user in __dev_queue_xmit()
submitting a skb on the same CPU. This is fine in general but this means
also that the current CPU is recorded as netdev_queue::xmit_lock_owner.
This in turn leads to the recursion alert and the skb is dropped.

Instead checking the for CPU number, that owns the lock, PREEMPT_RT can
check if the lockowner matches the current task.

Add netif_tx_owned() which returns true if the current context owns the
lock by comparing the provided CPU number with the recorded number. This
resembles the current check by negating the condition (the current check
returns true if the lock is not owned).
On PREEMPT_RT use rt_mutex_owner() to return the lock owner and compare
the current task against it.
Use the new helper in __dev_queue_xmit() and netif_local_xmit_active()
which provides a similar check.
Update comments regarding pairing READ_ONCE().

Linus Torvalds bf4afc53b7 Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using

    git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
        xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'

to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.

Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.

For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

Kees Cook 69050f8d6d treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:

Single allocations:	kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)

Array allocations:	kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)

Flex array allocations:	kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)

(where TYPE may also be *VAR)

The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

Breno LeitaoandJakub Kicinski e5235eb6cf net: netpoll: initialize work queue before error checks
Prevent a kernel warning when netconsole setup fails on devices with
IFF_DISABLE_NETPOLL flag. The warning (at kernel/workqueue.c:4242 in
__flush_work) occurs because the cleanup path tries to cancel an
uninitialized work queue.

When __netpoll_setup() encounters a device with IFF_DISABLE_NETPOLL,
it fails early and calls skb_pool_flush() for cleanup. This function
calls cancel_work_sync(&np->refill_wq), but refill_wq hasn't been
initialized yet, triggering the warning.

Move INIT_WORK() to the beginning of __netpoll_setup(), ensuring the
work queue is properly initialized before any potential failure points.
This allows the cleanup path to safely cancel the work queue regardless
of where the setup fails.

Breno LeitaoandJakub Kicinski 49c8d2c1f9 net: netpoll: fix incorrect refcount handling causing incorrect cleanup
commit efa95b01da ("netpoll: fix use after free") incorrectly
ignored the refcount and prematurely set dev->npinfo to NULL during
netpoll cleanup, leading to improper behavior and memory leaks.

Scenario causing lack of proper cleanup:

1) A netpoll is associated with a NIC (e.g., eth0) and netdev->npinfo is
   allocated, and refcnt = 1
   - Keep in mind that npinfo is shared among all netpoll instances. In
     this case, there is just one.

2) Another netpoll is also associated with the same NIC and
   npinfo->refcnt += 1.
   - Now dev->npinfo->refcnt = 2;
   - There is just one npinfo associated to the netdev.

3) When the first netpolls goes to clean up:
   - The first cleanup succeeds and clears np->dev->npinfo, ignoring
     refcnt.
     - It basically calls `RCU_INIT_POINTER(np->dev->npinfo, NULL);`
   - Set dev->npinfo = NULL, without proper cleanup
   - No ->ndo_netpoll_cleanup() is either called

4) Now the second target tries to clean up
   - The second cleanup fails because np->dev->npinfo is already NULL.
     * In this case, ops->ndo_netpoll_cleanup() was never called, and
       the skb pool is not cleaned as well (for the second netpoll
       instance)
  - This leaks npinfo and skbpool skbs, which is clearly reported by
    kmemleak.

Revert commit efa95b01da ("netpoll: fix use after free") and adds
clarifying comments emphasizing that npinfo cleanup should only happen
once the refcount reaches zero, ensuring stable and correct netpoll
behavior.

Breno LeitaoandJakub Kicinski 327c20c21d netpoll: Fix deadlock in memory allocation under spinlock
Fix a AA deadlock in refill_skbs() where memory allocation while holding
skb_pool->lock can trigger a recursive lock acquisition attempt.

The deadlock scenario occurs when the system is under severe memory
pressure:

1. refill_skbs() acquires skb_pool->lock (spinlock)
2. alloc_skb() is called while holding the lock
3. Memory allocator fails and calls slab_out_of_memory()
4. This triggers printk() for the OOM warning
5. The console output path calls netpoll_send_udp()
6. netpoll_send_udp() attempts to acquire the same skb_pool->lock
7. Deadlock: the lock is already held by the same CPU

Call stack:

This bug was exposed by commit 248f6571fd ("netpoll: Optimize skb
refilling on critical path") which removed refill_skbs() from the
critical path (where nested printk was being deferred), letting nested
printk being called from inside refill_skbs()

Refactor refill_skbs() to never allocate memory while holding
the spinlock.

Another possible solution to fix this problem is protecting the
refill_skbs() from nested printks, basically calling
printk_deferred_{enter,exit}() in refill_skbs(), then, any nested
pr_warn() would be deferred.

I prefer this approach, given I _think_ it might be a good idea to move
the alloc_skb() from GFP_ATOMIC to GFP_KERNEL in the future, so, having
the alloc_skb() outside of the lock will be necessary step.

There is a possible TOCTOU issue when checking for the pool length, and
queueing the new allocated skb, but, this is not an issue, given that
an extra SKB in the pool is harmless and it will be eventually used.

Breno LeitaoandJakub Kicinski 614accf545 net: netpoll: use synchronize_net() instead of synchronize_rcu()
Replace synchronize_rcu() with synchronize_net() in __netpoll_free().

synchronize_net() is RTNL-aware and will use the more efficient
synchronize_rcu_expedited() when called under RTNL lock, avoiding
the potentially expensive synchronize_rcu() in RTNL critical sections.

Since __netpoll_free() is called with RTNL held (as indicated by
ASSERT_RTNL()), this change improves performance by reducing the
time spent in the RTNL critical section.

Jakub Kicinski 2da4def0f4 netpoll: prevent hanging NAPI when netcons gets enabled
Paolo spotted hangs in NIPA running driver tests against virtio.
The tests hang in virtnet_close() -> virtnet_napi_tx_disable().

The problem is only reproducible if running multiple of our tests
in sequence (I used TEST_PROGS="xdp.py ping.py netcons_basic.sh \
netpoll_basic.py stats.py"). Initial suspicion was that this is
a simple case of double-disable of NAPI, but instrumenting the
code reveals:

 Deadlocked on NAPI ffff888007cd82c0 (virtnet_poll_tx):
   state: 0x37, disabled: false, owner: 0, listed: false, weight: 64

The NAPI was not in fact disabled, owner is 0 (rather than -1),
so the NAPI "thinks" it's scheduled for CPU 0 but it's not listed
(!list_empty(&n->poll_list) => false). It seems odd that normal NAPI
processing would wedge itself like this.

Better suspicion is that netpoll gets enabled while NAPI is polling,
and also grabs the NAPI instance. This confuses napi_complete_done():

This feels very unlikely, but perhaps virtio has some interactions
with the hypervisor in the NAPI ->poll that makes the race window
larger?

Best I could to to prove the theory was to add and trigger this
warning in napi_poll (just before netpoll_poll_unlock()):

If this warning hits the next virtio_close() will hang.

This patch survived 30 test iterations without a hang (without it
the longest clean run was around 10). Credit for triggering this
goes to Breno's recent netconsole tests.

Move UDP header construction from netpoll_send_udp() into a new
static helper function push_udp(). This completes the protocol
layer refactoring by:

1. Creating a dedicated helper for UDP header assembly
2. Removing UDP-specific logic from the main send function
3. Establishing a consistent pattern with existing IPv4/IPv6 helpers:
   - push_udp()
   - push_ipv4()
   - push_ipv6()

The change improves code organization and maintains the encapsulation
pattern established in previous refactorings.

Move IPv4 header construction from netpoll_send_udp() into a new
static helper function push_ipv4(). This completes the refactoring
started with IPv6 header handling, creating symmetric helper functions
for both IP versions.

Changes include:
1. Extracting IPv4 header setup logic into push_ipv4()
2. Replacing inline IPv4 code with helper call
3. Moving eth assignment after helper calls for consistency

The refactoring reduces code duplication and improves maintainability
by isolating IP version-specific logic.

Replace pointer-dereference sizeof() operations with explicit struct names
for improved readability and maintainability. This change:

1. Replaces `sizeof(*udph)` with `sizeof(struct udphdr)`
2. Replaces `sizeof(*ip6h)` with `sizeof(struct ipv6hdr)`
3. Replaces `sizeof(*iph)` with `sizeof(struct iphdr)`

This will make it easy to move code in the upcoming patches.

No functional changes are introduced by this patch.

the initialization of the UDP checksum, which was wrong and broke

Extract the IPv6 address retrieval logic from netpoll_setup() into
a dedicated helper function netpoll_take_ipv6() to improve code
organization and readability.

The function handles obtaining the local IPv6 address from the
network device, including proper address type matching between
local and remote addresses (link-local vs global), and includes
appropriate error handling when IPv6 is not supported or no
suitable address is available.

Move netpoll_print_options() from net/core/netpoll.c to
drivers/net/netconsole.c and make it static. This function is only used
by netconsole, so there's no need to export it or keep it in the public
netpoll API.

This reduces the netpoll API surface and improves code locality
by keeping netconsole-specific functionality within the netconsole
driver.

Breno LeitaoandJakub Kicinski 5a34c9a853 netpoll: relocate netconsole-specific functions to netconsole module
Move netpoll_parse_ip_addr() and netpoll_parse_options() from the generic
netpoll module to the netconsole module where they are actually used.

These functions were originally placed in netpoll but are only consumed by
netconsole. This refactoring improves code organization by:

 - Removing unnecessary exported symbols from netpoll
 - Making netpoll_parse_options() static (no longer needs global visibility)
 - Reducing coupling between netpoll and netconsole modules

The functions remain functionally identical - this is purely a code
reorganization to better reflect their actual usage patterns. Here are
the changes:

 1) Move both functions from netpoll to netconsole
 2) Add static to netpoll_parse_options()
 3) Removed the EXPORT_SYMBOL()

PS: This diff does not change the function format, so, it is easy to
review, but, checkpatch will not be happy. A follow-up patch will
address the current issues reported by checkpatch.
