Breno LeitaoandAndrew Morton 8f5857be99 mm: blk-cgroup: fix use-after-free in cgwb_release_workfn()
cgwb_release_workfn() calls css_put(wb->blkcg_css) and then later accesses
wb->blkcg_css again via blkcg_unpin_online(). If css_put() drops the last
reference, the blkcg can be freed asynchronously (css_free_rwork_fn ->
blkcg_css_free -> kfree) before blkcg_unpin_online() dereferences the
pointer to access blkcg->online_pin, resulting in a use-after-free:

  BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in blkcg_unpin_online (./include/linux/instrumented.h:112 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-instrumented.h:400 ./include/linux/refcount.h:389 ./include/linux/refcount.h:432 ./include/linux/refcount.h:450 block/blk-cgroup.c:1367)

** Stack based on commit 66672af7a095 ("Add linux-next specific files
for 20260410")

I am seeing this crash sporadically in Meta fleet across multiple kernel
versions. A full reproducer is available at:
https://github.com/leitao/debug/blob/main/reproducers/repro_blkcg_uaf.sh

(The race window is narrow. To make it easily reproducible, inject a
msleep(100) between css_put() and blkcg_unpin_online() in
cgwb_release_workfn(). With that delay and a KASAN-enabled kernel, the
reproducer triggers the splat reliably in less than a second.)

Fix this by moving blkcg_unpin_online() before css_put(), so the
cgwb's CSS reference keeps the blkcg alive while blkcg_unpin_online()
accesses it.

Kees Cook 69050f8d6d treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:

Single allocations:	kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)

Array allocations:	kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)

Flex array allocations:	kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)

(where TYPE may also be *VAR)

The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

Marco CrivellariandAndrew Morton ed0a826ce3 mm: add WQ_PERCPU to alloc_workqueue users
This continues the effort to refactor workqueue APIs, which began with the
introduction of new workqueues and a new alloc_workqueue flag in:

   commit 128ea9f6cc ("workqueue: Add system_percpu_wq and system_dfl_wq")
   commit 930c2ea566 ("workqueue: Add new WQ_PERCPU flag")

The refactoring is going to alter the default behavior of
alloc_workqueue() to be unbound by default.

With the introduction of the WQ_PERCPU flag (equivalent to !WQ_UNBOUND),
any alloc_workqueue() caller that doesn't explicitly specify WQ_UNBOUND
must now use WQ_PERCPU. For more details see the Link tag below.

In order to keep alloc_workqueue() behavior identical, explicitly request
WQ_PERCPU.

Marco CrivellariandAndrew Morton 73b2162126 mm: replace use of system_wq with system_percpu_wq
This patch continues the effort to refactor workqueue APIs, which has
begun with the changes introducing new workqueues and a new
alloc_workqueue flag:

   commit 128ea9f6cc ("workqueue: Add system_percpu_wq and system_dfl_wq")
   commit 930c2ea566 ("workqueue: Add new WQ_PERCPU flag")

The point of the refactoring is to eventually alter the default behavior
of workqueues to become unbound by default so that their workload
placement is optimized by the scheduler.

Before that to happen, workqueue users must be converted to the better
named new workqueues with no intended behaviour changes:

   system_wq -> system_percpu_wq
   system_unbound_wq -> system_dfl_wq

This way the old obsolete workqueues (system_wq, system_unbound_wq) can be
removed in the future.

Marco CrivellariandAndrew Morton 0bcbd7cf65 mm: replace use of system_unbound_wq with system_dfl_wq
Patch series "Replace wq users and add WQ_PERCPU to alloc_workqueue()
users", v2.

This series continues the effort to refactor the Workqueue API. No
behavior changes are introduced by this series.

=== Recent changes to the WQ API ===

The following, address the recent changes in the Workqueue API:

- commit 128ea9f6cc ("workqueue: Add system_percpu_wq and system_dfl_wq")
- commit 930c2ea566 ("workqueue: Add new WQ_PERCPU flag")

The old workqueues will be removed in a future release cycle and
unbound will become the implicit default.

=== Introduced Changes by this series ===

1) [P 1-2] Replace use of system_wq and system_unbound_wq

    Workqueue users converted to the better named new workqueues:

        system_wq -> system_percpu_wq
        system_unbound_wq -> system_dfl_wq

    This way the old obsolete workqueues (system_wq, system_unbound_wq) can be
    removed in the future.

2) [P 3] add WQ_PERCPU to remaining alloc_workqueue() users

    With the introduction of the WQ_PERCPU flag (equivalent to !WQ_UNBOUND),
    any alloc_workqueue() caller that doesn’t explicitly specify WQ_UNBOUND
    must now use WQ_PERCPU.

    WQ_UNBOUND will be removed in future.

Johannes WeinerandAndrew Morton 64dd89ae01 mm/block/fs: remove laptop_mode
Laptop mode was introduced to save battery, by delaying and consolidating
writes and thereby maximize the time rotating hard drives wouldn't have to
spin.

Luckily, rotating hard drives, with their high spin-up times and power
draw, are a thing of the past for battery-powered devices. Reclaim has
also since changed to not write single filesystem pages anymore, and
regular filesystem writeback is lumpy by design.

The juice doesn't appear worth the squeeze anymore. The footprint of the
feature is small, but nevertheless it's a complicating factor in mm,
block, filesystems. Developers don't think about it, and it likely hasn't
been tested with new reclaim and writeback changes in years.

Let's sunset it. Keep the sysctl with a deprecation warning around for a
few more cycles, but remove all functionality behind it.

Jan KaraandChristian Brauner e1b849cfa6 writeback: Avoid contention on wb->list_lock when switching inodes
There can be multiple inode switch works that are trying to switch
inodes to / from the same wb. This can happen in particular if some
cgroup exits which owns many (thousands) inodes and we need to switch
them all. In this case several inode_switch_wbs_work_fn() instances will
be just spinning on the same wb->list_lock while only one of them makes
forward progress. This wastes CPU cycles and quickly leads to softlockup
reports and unusable system.

Instead of running several inode_switch_wbs_work_fn() instances in
parallel switching to the same wb and contending on wb->list_lock, run
just one work item per wb and manage a queue of isw items switching to
this wb.

Kemeng ShiandAndrew Morton e32e27009f writeback: collect stats of all wb of bdi in bdi_debug_stats_show
Patch series "Improve visibility of writeback", v5.

This series tries to improve visilibity of writeback. Patch 1 make
/sys/kernel/debug/bdi/xxx/stats show writeback info of whole bdi instead
of only writeback info in root cgroup. Patch 2 add a new debug file
/sys/kernel/debug/bdi/xxx/wb_stats to show per wb writeback info. Patch 3
add wb_monitor.py to monitor basic writeback info of running system, more
info could be added on demand. Patch 4 is a random cleanup. More details
can be found in respective patches.

Following domain hierarchy is tested:

This patch (of 5):

/sys/kernel/debug/bdi/xxx/stats is supposed to show writeback information
of whole bdi, but only writeback information of bdi in root cgroup is
collected. So writeback information in non-root cgroup are missing now.
To be more specific, considering following case:

/* create writeback cgroup */
cd /sys/fs/cgroup
echo "+memory +io" > cgroup.subtree_control
mkdir group1
cd group1
echo $$ > cgroup.procs
/* do writeback in cgroup */
fio -name test -filename=/dev/vdb ...
/* get writeback info of bdi */
cat /sys/kernel/debug/bdi/xxx/stats
The cat result unexpectedly implies that there is no writeback on target
bdi.

Fix this by collecting stats of all wb in bdi instead of only wb in
root cgroup.

Following domain hierarchy is tested:
                global domain (320G)
                /                 \

Linus Torvalds 7ea65c89d8 Merge tag 'vfs-6.9.misc' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull misc vfs updates from Christian Brauner:
 "Misc features, cleanups, and fixes for vfs and individual filesystems.

  Features:

   - Support idmapped mounts for hugetlbfs.

   - Add RWF_NOAPPEND flag for pwritev2(). This allows us to fix a bug
     where the passed offset is ignored if the file is O_APPEND. The new
     flag allows a caller to enforce that the offset is honored to
     conform to posix even if the file was opened in append mode.

   - Move i_mmap_rwsem in struct address_space to avoid false sharing
     between i_mmap and i_mmap_rwsem.

   - Convert efs, qnx4, and coda to use the new mount api.

   - Add a generic is_dot_dotdot() helper that's used by various
     filesystems and the VFS code instead of open-coding it multiple
     times.

   - Recently we've added stable offsets which allows stable ordering
     when iterating directories exported through NFS on e.g., tmpfs
     filesystems. Originally an xarray was used for the offset map but
     that caused slab fragmentation issues over time. This switches the
     offset map to the maple tree which has a dense mode that handles
     this scenario a lot better. Includes tests.

   - Finally merge the case-insensitive improvement series Gabriel has
     been working on for a long time. This cleanly propagates case
     insensitive operations through ->s_d_op which in turn allows us to
     remove the quite ugly generic_set_encrypted_ci_d_ops() operations.
     It also improves performance by trying a case-sensitive comparison
     first and then fallback to case-insensitive lookup if that fails.
     This also fixes a bug where overlayfs would be able to be mounted
     over a case insensitive directory which would lead to all sort of
     odd behaviors.

  Cleanups:

   - Make file_dentry() a simple accessor now that ->d_real() is
     simplified because of the backing file work we did the last two
     cycles.

   - Use the dedicated file_mnt_idmap helper in ntfs3.

   - Use smp_load_acquire/store_release() in the i_size_read/write
     helpers and thus remove the hack to handle i_size reads in the
     filemap code.

   - The SLAB_MEM_SPREAD is a nop now. Remove it from various places in
     fs/

   - It's no longer necessary to perform a second built-in initramfs
     unpack call because we retain the contents of the previous
     extraction. Remove it.

   - Now that we have removed various allocators kfree_rcu() always
     works with kmem caches and kmalloc(). So simplify various places
     that only use an rcu callback in order to handle the kmem cache
     case.

   - Convert the pipe code to use a lockdep comparison function instead
     of open-coding the nesting making lockdep validation easier.

   - Move code into fs-writeback.c that was located in a header but can
     be made static as it's only used in that one file.

   - Rewrite the alignment checking iterators for iovec and bvec to be
     easier to read, and also significantly more compact in terms of
     generated code. This saves 270 bytes of text on x86-64 (with
     clang-18) and 224 bytes on arm64 (with gcc-13). In profiles it also
     saves a bit of time for the same workload.

   - Switch various places to use KMEM_CACHE instead of
     kmem_cache_create().

   - Use inode_set_ctime_to_ts() in inode_set_ctime_current()

   - Use kzalloc() in name_to_handle_at() to avoid kernel infoleak.

   - Various smaller cleanups for eventfds.

  Fixes:

   - Fix various comments and typos, and unneeded initializations.

   - Fix stack allocation hack for clang in the select code.

   - Improve dump_mapping() debug code on a best-effort basis.

   - Fix build errors in various selftests.

   - Avoid wrap-around instrumentation in various places.

   - Don't allow user namespaces without an idmapping to be used for
     idmapped mounts.

   - Fix sysv sb_read() call.

   - Fix fallback implementation of the get_name() export operation"

Jan KaraandJens Axboe f814bdda77 blk-wbt: Fix detection of dirty-throttled tasks
The detection of dirty-throttled tasks in blk-wbt has been subtly broken
since its beginning in 2016. Namely if we are doing cgroup writeback and
the throttled task is not in the root cgroup, balance_dirty_pages() will
set dirty_sleep for the non-root bdi_writeback structure. However
blk-wbt checks dirty_sleep only in the root cgroup bdi_writeback
structure. Thus detection of recently throttled tasks is not working in
this case (we noticed this when we switched to cgroup v2 and suddently
writeback was slow).

Since blk-wbt has no easy way to get to proper bdi_writeback and
furthermore its intention has always been to work on the whole device
rather than on individual cgroups, just move the dirty_sleep timestamp
from bdi_writeback to backing_dev_info. That fixes the checking for
recently throttled task and saves memory for everybody as a bonus.

ZhangPengandAndrew Morton 61f2973801 mm: remove redundant K() macro definition
Patch series "cleanup with helper macro K()".

Use helper macro K() to improve code readability. No functional
modification involved. Remove redundant K() macro definition.

This patch (of 7):

Since commit eb8589b4f8 ("mm: move mem_init_print_info() to mm_init.c"),
the K() macro definition has been moved to mm/internal.h. Therefore, the
definitions in mm/memcontrol.c, mm/backing-dev.c and mm/oom_kill.c are
redundant.  Drop redundant definitions.

 "Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.4-rc1.

  Once again, a busy development cycle, with lots of changes happening

  This will make the future rust interactions with the driver core more

  The changes required for this did touch many individual classes and

   - kobject logging improvements

   - cacheinfo improvements and updates

   - obligatory fw_devlink updates and fixes

   - documentation updates
