Youngjun ParkandRafael J. Wysocki a8d51efb59 PM: sleep: Drop spurious WARN_ON() from pm_restore_gfp_mask()
Commit 35e4a69b20 ("PM: sleep: Allow pm_restrict_gfp_mask()
stacking") introduced refcount-based GFP mask management that warns
when pm_restore_gfp_mask() is called with saved_gfp_count == 0.

Some hibernation paths call pm_restore_gfp_mask() defensively where
the GFP mask may or may not be restricted depending on the execution
path. For example, the uswsusp interface invokes it in
SNAPSHOT_CREATE_IMAGE, SNAPSHOT_UNFREEZE, and snapshot_release().
Before the stacking change this was a silent no-op; it now triggers
a spurious WARNING.

Remove the WARN_ON() wrapper from the !saved_gfp_count check while
retaining the check itself, so that defensive calls remain harmless
without producing false warnings.

Rafael J. Wysocki 4fb352df14 PM: sleep: Do not flag runtime PM workqueue as freezable
Till now, the runtime PM workqueue has been flagged as freezable, so it
does not process work items during system-wide PM transitions like
system suspend and resume.  The original reason to do that was to
reduce the likelihood of runtime PM getting in the way of system-wide
PM processing, but now it is mostly an optimization because (1) runtime
suspend of devices is prevented by bumping up their runtime PM usage
counters in device_prepare() and (2) device drivers are expected to
disable runtime PM for the devices handled by them before they embark
on system-wide PM activities that may change the state of the hardware
or otherwise interfere with runtime PM.  However, it prevents
asynchronous runtime resume of devices from working during system-wide
PM transitions, which is confusing because synchronous runtime resume
is not prevented at the same time, and it also sometimes turns out to
be problematic.

For example, it has been reported that blk_queue_enter() may deadlock
during a system suspend transition because of the pm_request_resume()
usage in it [1].  It may also deadlock during a system resume transition
in a similar way.  That happens because the asynchronous runtime resume
of the given device is not processed due to the freezing of the runtime
PM workqueue.  While it may be better to address this particular issue
in the block layer, the very presence of it means that similar problems
may be expected to occur elsewhere.

For this reason, remove the WQ_FREEZABLE flag from the runtime PM
workqueue and make device_suspend_late() use the generic variant of
pm_runtime_disable() that will carry out runtime PM of the device
synchronously if there is pending resume work for it.

Also update the comment before the pm_runtime_disable() call in
device_suspend_late(), to document the fact that the runtime PM
should not be expected to work for the device until the end of
device_resume_early(), and update the related documentation.

This change may, even though it is not expected to, uncover some
latent issues related to queuing up asynchronous runtime resume
work items during system suspend or hibernation.  However, they
should be limited to the interference between runtime resume and
system-wide PM callbacks in the cases when device drivers start
to handle system-wide PM before disabling runtime PM as described
above.

Samuel WuandRafael J. Wysocki bf8867eae1 PM: sleep: Add support for wakeup during filesystem sync
Add helper function pm_sleep_fs_sync() and related data structures
as a preparation for allowing system suspend and hibernation to be
aborted by wakeup events while syncing file systems.

The new function, to be called by the suspend process in order to
sync file systems, uses a dedicated ordered workqueue to run
ksys_sync_helper() in parallel with the calling process.  Next, it
waits for the completion of the filesystem sync and periodically
checks if any system wakeup events are pending, in which case it will
return an error.

If that happens while the filesystem sync is still in progress, it
will continue, possibly after pm_sleep_fs_sync() has returned, and if
that function is called again before the sync is complete, a new work
item to run ksys_sync_helper() again will be queued (and waited for)
to increase the likelihood of writing all of the dirty pages in memory
back to persistent storage.

Rafael J. Wysocki 35e4a69b20 PM: sleep: Allow pm_restrict_gfp_mask() stacking
Allow pm_restrict_gfp_mask() to be called many times in a row to avoid
issues with calling dpm_suspend_start() when the GFP mask has been
already restricted.

Only the first invocation of pm_restrict_gfp_mask() will actually
restrict the GFP mask and the subsequent calls will warn if there is
a mismatch between the expected allowed GFP mask and the actual one.

Moreover, if pm_restrict_gfp_mask() is called many times in a row,
pm_restore_gfp_mask() needs to be called matching number of times in
a row to actually restore the GFP mask.  Calling it when the GFP mask
has not been restricted will cause it to warn.

This is necessary for the GFP mask restriction starting in
hibernation_snapshot() to continue throughout the entire hibernation
flow until it completes or it is aborted (either by a wakeup event or
by an error).

Marco CrivellariandRafael J. Wysocki c9ff363738 PM: WQ_UNBOUND added to pm_wq workqueue
Currently if a user enqueue a work item using schedule_delayed_work() the
used wq is "system_wq" (per-cpu wq) while queue_delayed_work() use
WORK_CPU_UNBOUND (used when a cpu is not specified). The same applies to
schedule_work() that is using system_wq and queue_work(), that makes use
again of WORK_CPU_UNBOUND.

This lack of consistentcy cannot be addressed without refactoring the API.

alloc_workqueue() treats all queues as per-CPU by default, while unbound
workqueues must opt-in via WQ_UNBOUND.

This default is suboptimal: most workloads benefit from unbound queues,
allowing the scheduler to place worker threads where they’re needed and
reducing noise when CPUs are isolated.

This change add the WQ_UNBOUND flag to pm_wq, to make explicit this
workqueue can be unbound and that it does not benefit from per-cpu work.

Once migration is complete, WQ_UNBOUND can be removed and unbound will
become the implicit default.

Tudor AmbarusandRafael J. Wysocki f747cde5e7 PM: sleep: add kernel parameter to disable asynchronous suspend/resume
On some platforms, device dependencies are not properly represented by
device links, which can cause issues when asynchronous power management
is enabled. While it is possible to disable this via sysfs, doing so
at runtime can race with the first system suspend event.

This patch introduces a kernel command-line parameter, "pm_async", which
can be set to "off" to globally disable asynchronous suspend and resume
operations from early boot. It effectively provides a way to set the
initial value of the existing pm_async sysfs knob at boot time. This
offers a robust method to fall back to synchronous (sequential)
operation, which can stabilize platforms with problematic dependencies
and also serve as a useful debugging tool.

The default behavior remains unchanged (asynchronous enabled). To
disable it, boot the kernel with the "pm_async=off" parameter.

 "Once again, the changes are dominated by cpufreq updates, but this
  time the majority of them are cpufreq core changes, mostly related to
  the introduction of policy locking guards and __free() usage, and
  fixes related to boost handling.

  Still, there is also a significant update of the intel_pstate driver
  making it register an energy model when running on a hybrid platform
  which is used for enabling energy-aware scheduling (EAS) if the driver
  operates in the passive mode (and schedutil is used as the cpufreq
  governor for all CPUs which is the passive mode default).

  There are some amd-pstate driver updates too, for a good measure,
  including the "Requested CPU Min frequency" BIOS option support and
  new online/offline callbacks.

  In the cpuidle space, the most significant change is the addition of a
  C1 demotion on/off sysfs knob to intel_idle which should help some
  users to configure their systems more precisely. There is also the
  conversion of the PSCI cpuidle driver to a faux device one and there
  are two small updates of cpuidle governors.

  Device power management is also modified quite a bit, especially the
  handling of devices with asynchronous suspend and resume enabled
  during system transitions. They are now going to be handled more
  asynchronously during suspend transitions and somewhat less
  aggressively during resume transitions.

  Apart from the above, the operating performance points (OPP) library
  is now going to use mutex locking guards and scope-based cleanup
  helpers and there is the usual bunch of assorted fixes and code
  cleanups.

  Specifics:

   - Fix potential division-by-zero error in em_compute_costs() (Yaxiong
     Tian)

   - Fix typos in energy model documentation and example driver code
     (Moon Hee Lee, Atul Kumar Pant)

   - Rearrange the energy model management code and add a new function
     for adjusting a CPU energy model after adjusting the capacity of

Rafael J. Wysocki f5c0ecf196 PM: sleep: Introduce pm_sleep_transition_in_progress()
The "suspend in progress" check in device_wakeup_enable() does not
cover hibernation, but arguably it should do that, so introduce
pm_sleep_transition_in_progress() covering transitions during both
system suspend and hibernation to use in there and use it also in
pm_debug_messages_should_print().

Rafael J. Wysocki 1b17d4525b PM: sleep: Print PM debug messages during hibernation
Commit cdb8c100d8 ("include/linux/suspend.h: Only show pm_pr_dbg
messages at suspend/resume") caused PM debug messages to only be
printed during system-wide suspend and resume in progress, but it
forgot about hibernation.

Address this by adding a check for hibernation in progress to
pm_debug_messages_should_print().

Christian Brauner eacfbf7419 power: freeze filesystems during suspend/resume
Now all the pieces are in place to actually allow the power subsystem
to freeze/thaw filesystems during suspend/resume. Filesystems are only
frozen and thawed if the power subsystem does actually own the freeze.

We could bubble up errors and fail suspend/resume if the error isn't
EBUSY (aka it's already frozen) but I don't think that this is worth it.
Filesystem freezing during suspend/resume is best-effort. If the user
has 500 ext4 filesystems mounted and 4 fail to freeze for whatever
reason then we simply skip them.

What we have now is already a big improvement and let's see how we fare
with it before making our lives even harder (and uglier) than we have
to.

We add a new sysctl know /sys/power/freeze_filesystems that will allow
userspace to freeze filesystems during suspend/hibernate. For now it
defaults to off. The thaw logic doesn't require checking whether
freezing is enabled because the power subsystem exclusively owns frozen
filesystems for the duration of suspend/hibernate and is able to skip
filesystems it doesn't need to freeze.

Also it is technically possible that filesystem
filesystem_freeze_enabled is true and power freezes the filesystems but
before freezing all processes another process disables
filesystem_freeze_enabled. If power were to place the filesystems_thaw()
call under filesystems_freeze_enabled it would fail to thaw the
fileystems it frozw. The exclusive holder mechanism makes it possible to
iterate through the list without any concern making sure that no
filesystems are left frozen.

Rafael J. Wysocki a6d38e991d PM: sleep: stats: Use locking in dpm_save_failed_dev()
Because dpm_save_failed_dev() may be called simultaneously by multiple
failing device PM functions, the state of the suspend_stats fields
updated by it may become inconsistent.

Prevent that from happening by using a lock in dpm_save_failed_dev().

Rafael J. Wysocki 9ff544fa5f PM: sleep: stats: Define suspend_stats next to the code using it
It is not necessary to define struct suspend_stats in a header file and the
suspend_stats variable in the core device system-wide PM code.  They both
can be defined in kernel/power/main.c, next to the sysfs and debugfs code
accessing suspend_stats, which can be static.

Modify the code in question in accordance with the above observation and
replace the static inline functions manipulating suspend_stats with
regular ones defined in kernel/power/main.c.

While at it, move the enum suspend_stat_step to the end of suspend.h which
is a more suitable place for it.

No intentional functional impact.

Rafael J. Wysocki b730bab0b9 PM: sleep: stats: Use an array of step failure counters
Instead of using a set of individual struct suspend_stats fields
representing suspend step failure counters, use an array of counters
indexed by enum suspend_stat_step for this purpose, which allows
dpm_save_failed_step() to increment the appropriate counter
automatically, so that its callers don't need to do that directly.

It also allows suspend_stats_show() to carry out a loop over the
counters array to print their values.

Because the counters cannot become negative, use unsigned int for
representing them.

The only user-observable impact of this change is a different
ordering of entries in the suspend_stats debugfs file which is not
expected to matter.

Rafael J. Wysocki bc88528cda PM: sleep: stats: Use array of suspend step names
Replace suspend_step_name() in the suspend statistics code with an array
of suspend step names which has fewer lines of code and less overhead.

While at it, remove two unnecessary line breaks in suspend_stats_show()
and adjust some white space in there to the kernel coding style for a
more consistent code layout.

No intentional functional impact.

Mario LimoncielloandRafael J. Wysocki cdb8c100d8 include/linux/suspend.h: Only show pm_pr_dbg messages at suspend/resume
All uses in the kernel are currently already oriented around
suspend/resume. As some other parts of the kernel may also use these
messages in functions that could also be used outside of
suspend/resume, only enable in suspend/resume path.

Kefeng WangandAndrew Morton 07f44ac3c9 mm: page_alloc: move pm_* function into power
pm_restrict_gfp_mask()/pm_restore_gfp_mask() only used in power, let's
move them out of page_alloc.c.

Adding a general gfp_has_io_fs() function which return true if gfp with
both __GFP_IO and __GFP_FS flags, then use it inside of
pm_suspended_storage(), also the pm_suspended_storage() is moved into
suspend.h.

Mario LimoncielloandRafael J. Wysocki b52124a78a PM: Add sysfs files to represent time spent in hardware sleep state
Userspace can't easily discover how much of a sleep cycle was spent in a
hardware sleep state without using kernel tracing and vendor specific sysfs
or debugfs files.

To make this information more discoverable, introduce 3 new sysfs files:
1) The time spent in a hw sleep state for last cycle.
2) The time spent in a hw sleep state since the kernel booted
3) The maximum time that the hardware can report for a sleep cycle.
All of these files will be present only if the system supports s2idle.
