Richard ChangandAndrew Morton bf62f69574 zram: fix use-after-free in zram_writeback_endio
A crash was observed in zram_writeback_endio due to a NULL pointer
dereference in wake_up.  The root cause is a race condition between the
bio completion handler (zram_writeback_endio) and the writeback task.

In zram_writeback_endio, wake_up() is called on &wb_ctl->done_wait after
releasing wb_ctl->done_lock.  This creates a race window where the
writeback task can see num_inflight become 0, return, and free wb_ctl
before zram_writeback_endio calls wake_up().

This patch fixes this race by using RCU.  By protecting wb_ctl with
rcu_read_lock() in zram_writeback_endio and using kfree_rcu() to free it,
we ensure that wb_ctl remains valid during the execution of
zram_writeback_endio.

Andrew StellmanandAndrew Morton 2f529e73d7 zram: reject unrecognized type= values in recompress_store()
recompress_store() parses the type= parameter with three if statements
checking for "idle", "huge", and "huge_idle".  An unrecognized value
silently falls through with mode left at 0, causing the recompression pass
to run with no slot filter — processing all slots instead of the
intended subset.

Add a !mode check after the type parsing block to return -EINVAL for
unrecognized values, consistent with the function's other parameter
validation.

Sergey SenozhatskyandAndrew Morton e3668b3713 zram: do not forget to endio for partial discard requests
As reported by Qu Wenruo and Avinesh Kumar, the following

 getconf PAGESIZE
 65536
 blkdiscard -p 4k /dev/zram0

takes literally forever to complete.  zram doesn't support partial
discards and just returns immediately w/o doing any discard work in such
cases.  The problem is that we forget to endio on our way out, so
blkdiscard sleeps forever in submit_bio_wait().  Fix this by jumping to
end_bio label, which does bio_endio().

scan_slots_for_writeback() and scan_slots_for_recompress() work in a "best
effort" fashion, if they cannot allocate memory for a new pp-slot
candidate they just return and post-processing selects slots that were
successfully scanned thus far.  scan_slots functions never return errors
and their callers never check the return status, so convert them to return
void.

When read_from_bdev_async() fails to chain bio, for instance fails to
allocate request or bio, we need to propagate the error condition so that
upper layer is aware of it.  zram already does that by setting
BLK_STS_IOERR ->bi_status, but only for sync reads.  Change async read
path to return its error status so that async errors are also handled.

Calling `LZ4_loadDict()` repeatedly in Zram causes significant overhead
due to its internal dictionary pre-processing.  This commit introduces a
template stream mechanism to pre-process the dictionary only once when the
dictionary is initially set or modified.  It then efficiently copies this
state for subsequent compressions.

Verification Test Items:

1. Collect Anonymous Page Dataset

Note: To ensure stable test results, it is best to lock the CPU frequency

LZ4 supports dictionaries up to 64KB. Below are the test results for
compression rates at various dictionary sizes:

When an LZ4 compression dictionary is enabled, compression speed is
negatively impacted by the dictionary's size; larger dictionaries result
in slower compression.  This patch eliminates the influence of dictionary
size on compression speed, ensuring consistent performance regardless of
dictionary scale.

We have two functions that accept algo= and priority= params -
algorithm_params_store() and recompress_store().  This patch unifies and
hardens handling of those parameters.

There are 4 possible cases:

- only priority= provided [recommended]
  We need to verify that provided priority value is
  within permitted range for each particular function.

- both algo= and priority= provided
  We cannot prioritize one over another.  All we should
  do is to verify that zram is configured in the way
  that user-space expects it to be.  Namely that zram
  indeed has compressor algo= setup at given priority=.

- only algo= provided [not recommended]
  We should lookup priority in compressors list.

- none provided [not recommended]
  Just use function's defaults.

Sergey SenozhatskyandAndrew Morton cedfa028b5 zram: remove chained recompression
Chained recompression has unpredictable behavior and is not useful in
practice.

First, systems usually configure just one alternative recompression
algorithm, which has slower compression/decompression but better
compression ratio.  A single alternative algorithm doesn't need chaining.

Second, even with multiple recompression algorithms, chained recompression
is suboptimal.  If a lower priority algorithm succeeds, the page is never
attempted with a higher priority algorithm, leading to worse memory
savings.  If a lower priority algorithm fails, the page is still attempted
with a higher priority algorithm, wasting resources on the failed lower
priority attempt.

In either case, the system would be better off targeting a specific
priority directly.

Chained recompression also significantly complicates the code.  Remove it.

It's not entirely correct to use ->num_active_comps for max-prio limit, as
->num_active_comps just tells the number of configured algorithms, not the
max configured priority.  For instance, in the following theoretical
example:

->num_active_comps is 2, while the actual max-prio is 3.

Drop ->num_active_comps and use ZRAM_MAX_COMPS instead.

Sergey SenozhatskyandAndrew Morton 241f9005b1 zram: do not permit params change after init
Patch series "zram: recompression cleanups and tweaks", v2.

This series is a somewhat random mix of fixups, recompression cleanups and
improvements partly based on internal conversations.  A few patches in the
series remove unexpected or confusing behaviour, e.g.  auto correction of
bad priority= param for recompression, which should have always been just
an error.  Then it also removes "chain recompression" which has a tricky,
unexpected and confusing behaviour at times.  We also unify and harden the
handling of algo/priority params.  There is also an addition of missing
device lock in algorithm_params_store() which previously permitted
modification of algo params while the device is active.


This patch (of 6):

First, algorithm_params_store(), like any sysfs handler, should grab
device lock.

Second, like any write() sysfs handler, it should grab device lock in
exclusive mode.

Third, it should not permit change of algos' parameters after device init,
as this doesn't make sense - we cannot compress with one C/D dict and then
just change C/D dict to a different one, for example.

Another thing to notice is that algorithm_params_store() accesses device's
->comp_algs for algo priority lookup, which should be protected by device
lock in exclusive mode in general.

Currently, zram dynamically allocates memory for compressor algorithm
names when they are set by the user.  This requires careful memory
management, including explicit `kfree` calls and special handling to avoid
freeing statically defined default compressor names.

This patch refactors the way zram handles compression algorithm names. 
Instead of storing dynamically allocated copies, `zram->comp_algs` will
now store pointers directly to the static name strings defined within the
`zcomp_ops` backend structures, thereby removing the need for conditional
`kfree` calls.

Sergey SenozhatskyandAndrew Morton b0377ee804 zram: do not slot_free() written-back slots
slot_free() basically completely resets the slots by clearing all of
its flags and attributes.  While zram_writeback_complete() restores
some of flags back (those that are necessary for async read
decompression) we still lose a lot of slot's metadata.  For example,
slot's ac-time, or ZRAM_INCOMPRESSIBLE.

More importantly, restoring flags/attrs requires extra attention as
some of the flags are directly affecting zram device stats.  And the
original code did not pay that attention.  Namely ZRAM_HUGE slots
handling in zram_writeback_complete().  The call to slot_free() would
decrement ->huge_pages, however when zram_writeback_complete() restored
the slot's ZRAM_HUGE flag, it would not get reflected in an incremented
->huge_pages.  So when the slot would finally get freed, slot_free()
would decrement ->huge_pages again, leading to underflow.

Fix this by open-coding the required memory free and stats updates in
zram_writeback_complete(), rather than calling the destructive
slot_free().  Since we now preserve the ZRAM_HUGE flag on written-back
slots (for the deferred decompression path), we also update slot_free()
to skip decrementing ->huge_pages if ZRAM_WB is set.

Rename writeback_compressed attr to compressed_writeback to avoid possible
confusion and have more natural naming.  writeback_compressed may look
like an alternative version of writeback while in fact
writeback_compressed only sets a writeback property.  Make this
distinction more clear with a new compressed_writeback name.

This updates a feature which is new in 7.0-rcX.

Linus Torvalds bf4afc53b7 Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using

    git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
        xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'

to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.

Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.

For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

Kees Cook 69050f8d6d treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:

Single allocations:	kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)

Array allocations:	kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)

Flex array allocations:	kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)

(where TYPE may also be *VAR)

The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

init_lock has completely outgrown its initial purpose and is no longer
used only to "prevent concurrent execution of device init" as the stale
comment suggests.  The scope of this lock is much bigger now.

These days this lock (rw_semaphore) controls how a task owns the
corresponding zram device: either in shared mode or in exclusive mode.

All zram device attribute writes should own the device in exclusive mode,
which synchronizes these tasks and prevents, for example, concurrent
execution of recompression and writeback.

All zram device attribute reads should own the device in shared mode.

Rename the lock to dev_lock to better reflect its current purpose.

Sergey SenozhatskyandAndrew Morton 0be909f114 zsmalloc: use actual object size to detect spans
Using class->size to detect spanning objects is not entirely correct,
because some size classes can hold a range of object sizes of up to
class->size bytes in length, due to size-classes merge.  Such classes use
padding for cases when actually written objects are smaller than
class->size.  zs_obj_read_begin() can incorrectly hit the slow path and
perform memcpy of such objects, basically copying padding bytes.  Instead
of class->size zs_obj_read_begin() should use the actual compressed object
length (both zram and zswap know it) so that it can correctly handle
situations when a written object is small enough to fit into the first
physical page.

Heiko CarstensandAndrew Morton a9853ac1c3 zram: remove KMSG_COMPONENT macro
The KMSG_COMPONENT macro is a leftover of the s390 specific "kernel
message catalog" from 2008 [1] which never made it upstream.

The macro was added to s390 code to allow for an out-of-tree patch which
used this to generate unique message ids.  Also this out-of-tree doesn't
exist anymore.

The pattern of how the KMSG_COMPONENT is used was partially also used for
non s390 specific code, for whatever reasons.

Remove the macro in order to get rid of a pointless indirection.

Sergey SenozhatskyandAndrew Morton 657a81fe3b zram: drop pp_in_progress
pp_in_progress makes sure that only one post-processing (writeback or
recomrpession) is active at any given time.  Functionality wise it,
basically, shadows zram init_lock, when init_lock is acquired in writer
mode.

Switch recompress_store() and writeback_store() to take zram init_lock in
writer mode, like all store() sysfs handlers should do, so that we can
drop pp_in_progress.  Recompression and writeback can be somewhat slow, so
holding init_lock in writer mode can block zram attrs reads, but in
reality the only zram attrs reads that take place are mm_stat reads, and
usually it's the same process that reads mm_stat and does recompression or
writeback.

We have a somewhat confusing internal API naming.  E.g.  the following
code:

	zram_slot_lock()
	if (zram_allocated())
		zram_set_flag()
	zram_slot_unlock()

may look like it does something on zram device level, but in fact it tests
and sets slot entry flags, not the device ones.

Rename API to explicitly distinguish functions that operate on the slot
level from functions that operate on the zram device level.

While at it, fixup some coding styles.

Sergey SenozhatskyandAndrew Morton 2e8ff2f51d zram: use u32 for entry ac_time tracking
We can reduce sizeof(zram_table_entry) on 64-bit systems by converting
flags and ac_time to u32.  Entry flags fit into u32, and for ac_time u32
gives us over a century of entry lifespan (approx 136 years) which is
plenty (zram uses system boot time (seconds)).

In struct zram_table_entry we use bytes aliasing, because bit-wait API
(for slot lock) requires a whole unsigned long word.
