Mike Rapoport (Microsoft)andAndrew Morton 6215d9f447 arch, mm: consolidate empty_zero_page
Reduce 22 declarations of empty_zero_page to 3 and 23 declarations of
ZERO_PAGE() to 4.

Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the
most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions
of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page).

Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the
core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement
colored zero page (MIPS and s390).

ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static
inline causes severe pain in header dependencies.

For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy:

* alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot
parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing
and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only
* arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of
  ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact.
* m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock,
although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS
  will work fine.
* sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it
can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE()
but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to
  empty_zero_page.
* sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot.
Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic
  empty_zero_page.
* hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page

/* A handy thing to have if one has the RAM. Declared in head.S */

that unfortunately had to go :)

Tiwei BieandJohannes Berg cd4126d48f um: Fix pte_read() and pte_exec() for kernel mappings
The pte_read() and pte_exec() helpers are only used during the TLB
sync to determine the read/exec permissions for mmap. However, for
kernel mappings, they will always return 0. This leads to kern_map()
having to unconditionally set the exec flag to 1 and the read flag
unexpectedly always being 0. Remove the unnecessary check for the
_PAGE_USER bit in these helpers to ensure that the kernel mapping
permissions can be correctly determined.

Recent changes have added an include of as-layout.h to pgtable.h.

Tiwei BieandJohannes Berg 1e4ee5135d um: Add initial SMP support
Add initial symmetric multi-processing (SMP) support to UML. With
this support enabled, users can tell UML to start multiple virtual
processors, each represented as a separate host thread.

In UML, kthreads and normal threads (when running in kernel mode)
can be scheduled and executed simultaneously on different virtual
processors. However, the userspace code of normal threads still
runs within their respective single-threaded stubs.

That is, SMP support is currently available both within the kernel
and across different processes, but still remains limited within
threads of the same process in userspace.

The file-based iomem emulation was introduced to support writing
paravirtualized drivers based on emulated iomem regions. However,
the only driver that makes use of it is an example driver called
mmapper, which was written over two decades ago.

We now have several modern device emulation mechanisms, such as
vhost-user-based virtio-uml. Remove the file-based iomem emulation

Benjamin BergandJohannes Berg bcf3d957c6 um: refactor TLB update handling
Conceptually, we want the memory mappings to always be up to date and
represent whatever is in the TLB. To ensure that, we need to sync them
over in the userspace case and for the kernel we need to process the
mappings.

The kernel will call flush_tlb_* if page table entries that were valid
before become invalid. Unfortunately, this is not the case if entries
are added.

As such, change both flush_tlb_* and set_ptes to track the memory range
that has to be synchronized. For the kernel, we need to execute a
flush_tlb_kern_* immediately but we can wait for the first page fault in
case of set_ptes. For userspace in contrast we only store that a range
of memory needs to be synced and do so whenever we switch to that
process.

Pull x86 shadow stack support from Dave Hansen:
"This is the long awaited x86 shadow stack support, part of Intel's
  Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET).

CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and
indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack
part of this feature, and just for userspace.

The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against
return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a
secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has
protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction,
the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and
to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops
the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy.

Rick Edgecombe 2f0584f3f4 mm: Rename arch pte_mkwrite()'s to pte_mkwrite_novma()
The x86 Shadow stack feature includes a new type of memory called shadow
stack. This shadow stack memory has some unusual properties, which requires
some core mm changes to function properly.

One of these unusual properties is that shadow stack memory is writable,
but only in limited ways. These limits are applied via a specific PTE
bit combination. Nevertheless, the memory is writable, and core mm code
will need to apply the writable permissions in the typical paths that
call pte_mkwrite(). The goal is to make pte_mkwrite() take a VMA, so
that the x86 implementation of it can know whether to create regular
writable or shadow stack mappings.

But there are a couple of challenges to this. Modifying the signatures of
each arch pte_mkwrite() implementation would be error prone because some
are generated with macros and would need to be re-implemented. Also, some
pte_mkwrite() callers operate on kernel memory without a VMA.

So this can be done in a three step process. First pte_mkwrite() can be
renamed to pte_mkwrite_novma() in each arch, with a generic pte_mkwrite()
added that just calls pte_mkwrite_novma(). Next callers without a VMA can
be moved to pte_mkwrite_novma(). And lastly, pte_mkwrite() and all callers
can be changed to take/pass a VMA.

Start the process by renaming pte_mkwrite() to pte_mkwrite_novma() and
adding the pte_mkwrite() wrapper in linux/pgtable.h. Apply the same
pattern for pmd_mkwrite(). Since not all archs have a pmd_mkwrite_novma(),
create a new arch config HAS_HUGE_PAGE that can be used to tell if
pmd_mkwrite() should be defined. Otherwise in the !HAS_HUGE_PAGE cases the
compiler would not be able to find pmd_mkwrite_novma().

No functional change.

David HildenbrandandAndrew Morton e2858d778e um/mm: support __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE
Let's support __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE by using bit 10, which is yet
unused for swap PTEs.

The pte_mkuptodate() is a bit weird in __pte_to_swp_entry() for a swap PTE
... but it only messes with bit 1 and 2 and there is a comment in
set_pte(), so leave these bits alone.

While at it, mask the type in __swp_entry().

Kefeng WangandAndrew Morton e025ab842e mm: remove kern_addr_valid() completely
Most architectures (except arm64/x86/sparc) simply return 1 for
kern_addr_valid(), which is only used in read_kcore(), and it calls
copy_from_kernel_nofault() which could check whether the address is a
valid kernel address. So as there is no need for kern_addr_valid(), let's
remove it.

Anshuman Khandualandakpm 91a8da021c um/mm: enable ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT
This enables ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT on the platform and exports
standard vm_get_page_prot() implementation via DECLARE_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT,
which looks up a private and static protection_map[] array. Subsequently
all __SXXX and __PXXX macros can be dropped which are no longer needed.
