Markus ArmbrusterandPhilippe Mathieu-Daudé 6d85f1d449 hw/scsi: Use error_setg_file_open() for a better error message
The error message changes from

    vhost-scsi: open vhost char device failed: REASON

to

    Could not open '/dev/vhost-scsi': REASON

I think the exact file name is more useful to know than the file's
purpose.

We could put back the "vhost-scsi: " prefix with error_prepend(). Not
worth the bother.

Arun MenonandPeter Xu 986c3292c6 migration: Fix regression of passing error_fatal into vmstate_load_state()
error_fatal is passed to vmstate_load_state() and vmstate_save_state()
functions. This was introduced in commit c632ffbd74. This would exit(1)
on error, and therefore does not allow to propagate the error back to
the caller.

To maintain consistency with prior error handling i.e. either propagating
the error to the caller or reporting it, we must set the error within a
local Error object instead of using error_fatal.

Mark Cave-AylandandPaolo Bonzini 36ec1a829a esp.c: fix esp_cdb_ready() FIFO wraparound limit calculation
The original calculation in commit 3cc70889a3 ("esp.c: prevent cmdfifo overflow
in esp_cdb_ready()") subtracted cmdfifo_cdb_offset from fifo8_num_used() to
calculate the outstanding cmdfifo length, but this is incorrect because
fifo8_num_used() can also include wraparound data.

Instead calculate the maximum offset used by scsi_cdb_length() which is just
the first byte after cmdfifo_cdb_offset, and then peek the entire content
of the cmdfifo. The fifo8_peek_bufptr() result will then return the maximum
length of remaining data up to the end of the internal cmdfifo array, which
can then be used for the overflow check.

HP-PARISC 715 machine with NCR710 SCSI chip

This series adds a new emulation for a HP PA-RISC 715/64 model,
as descrived here: https://www.openpa.net/systems/hp-9000_715.html.

That machine has no PCI bus and instead uses a "LASI" chip which has built-in
NCR 53c710 SCSI and i82596 network chips. Compared to the other already
emulated machines B160L and C3700, this machine should be able to support older
operating systems like HP-UX 9 as well.

The QEMU project participated in the Google Summer of Code 2025 program by
"Implementing LASI Network Card and NCR 710 SCSI Controller Device Models", and
Soumyajyotii Ssarkar stepped up to develop those drivers.

This patch series includes the code for the NCR710 SCSI controller,
the network code will follow in later patch series.

Fiona EbnerandStefan Hajnoczi 6910f04aa6 hw/scsi: avoid deadlock upon TMF request cancelling with VirtIO
When scsi_req_dequeue() is reached via
scsi_req_cancel_async()
virtio_scsi_tmf_cancel_req()
virtio_scsi_do_tmf_aio_context(),
there is a deadlock when trying to acquire the SCSI device's requests
lock, because it was already acquired in
virtio_scsi_do_tmf_aio_context().

In particular, the issue happens with a FreeBSD guest (13, 14, 15,
maybe more), when it cancels SCSI requests, because of timeout.

This is a regression caused by commit da6eebb33b ("virtio-scsi:
perform TMFs in appropriate AioContexts") and the introduction of the
requests_lock earlier.

To fix the issue, only cancel the requests after releasing the
requests_lock. For this, the SCSI device's requests are iterated while
holding the requests_lock and the requests to be cancelled are
collected in a list. Then, the collected requests are cancelled
one by one while not holding the requests_lock. This is safe, because
only requests from the current AioContext are collected and acted
upon.

Stefan HajnocziandMichael S. Tsirkin 1e9181dc52 virtio: unify virtio_notify_irqfd() and virtio_notify()
The difference between these two functions:
- virtio_notify() uses the interrupt code path (MSI or classic IRQs)
- virtio_notify_irqfd() uses guest notifiers (irqfds)

virtio_notify() can only be called with the BQL held because the
interrupt code path requires the BQL. Device models use
virtio_notify_irqfd() from IOThreads since the BQL is not held.

The two functions can be unified by pushing down the if
(qemu_in_iothread()) check from virtio-blk and virtio-scsi into core
virtio code. This is in preparation for the next commit that will add
irqfd support to virtio_notify_config() and where it's unattractive to
introduce another irqfd-only API for device model callers.

Arun MenonandPeter Xu 6f9fc6f501 migration: Remove error variant of vmstate_save_state() function
This commit removes the redundant vmstate_save_state_with_err()
function.

Previously, commit 969298f9d7 introduced vmstate_save_state_with_err()
to handle error propagation, while vmstate_save_state() existed for
non-error scenarios.
This is because there were code paths where vmstate_save_state_v()
(called internally by vmstate_save_state) did not explicitly set
errors on failure.

This change unifies error handling by
 - updating vmstate_save_state() to accept an Error **errp argument.
 - vmstate_save_state_v() ensures errors are set directly within the errp
   object, eliminating the need for two separate functions.

All calls to vmstate_save_state_with_err() are replaced with
vmstate_save_state(). This simplifies the API and improves code
maintainability.

vmstate_save_state() that only calls vmstate_save_state_v(),
by inference, also has errors set in errp in case of failure.
The errors are reported using error_report_err().
If we want the function to exit on error, then &error_fatal is
passed.

Arun MenonandPeter Xu c632ffbd74 migration: push Error **errp into vmstate_load_state()
This is an incremental step in converting vmstate loading
code to report error via Error objects instead of directly
printing it to console/monitor.
It is ensured that vmstate_load_state() must report an error
in errp, in case of failure.

The errors are temporarily reported using error_report_err().
This is removed in the subsequent patches in this series,
when we are actually able to propagate the error to the calling
function using errp. Whereas, if we want the function to exit on
error, then error_fatal is passed.

Mark Cave-AylandandPhilippe Mathieu-Daudé 6f8ce26bb0 esp.c: only allow ESP commands permitted in the current asc_mode
If an ESP command is issued in an incorrect mode then an illegal command
interrupt should be generated. Add a new esp_cmd_is_valid() function to
indicate whether the ESP command is valid for the current mode, and if not
then raise the illegal command interrupt.

This fixes WinNT MIPS which issues ICCS after a Chip Reset which is not
permitted, but will fail with an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error unless an
interrupt is generated.

Mark Cave-AylandandPhilippe Mathieu-Daudé ab1207401e esp.c: add asc_mode property to indicate the current ESP mode
Add a new asc_mode property to ESPState which indicates the current mode of
the ESP and update the ESP state machine accordingly.

Bump the vmstate version and include migration logic to ensure that asc_mode
is set to initiator mode such that any commands in progress will always
continue.

Mark Cave-AylandandPhilippe Mathieu-Daudé 28a579a349 esp.c: only call dma_memory_write function if transfer length is non-zero
In the cases where mixed DMA/non-DMA transfers are used or no data is
available, it is possible for the calculated transfer length to be zero.
Only call the dma_memory_write function where the transfer length is
non-zero to avoid invoking the DMA engine for a zero length transfer
which can have side-effects (along with generating additional tracing
noise).

Mark Cave-AylandandPhilippe Mathieu-Daudé daaaec4f54 esp.c: improve comment in esp_transfer_data()
Whilst working on the previous patch, the existing comment was not enough to
document when the TI command codepath was being used. Update and improve the
comment accordingly.

Mark Cave-AylandandPhilippe Mathieu-Daudé 1fa3812ee8 esp.c: only raise IRQ in esp_transfer_data() for CMD_SEL, CMD_SELATN and CMD_TI commands
Clarify the logic in esp_transfer_data() to ensure that the deferred interrupt code
can only be triggered for CMD_SEL, CMD_SELATN and CMD_TI commands. This should already
be the case, but make it explicit to ensure the logic isn't triggered unexpectedly.
