    Issue #5008: When a file is opened in append mode with the new IO library,
    do an explicit seek to the end of file (so that e.g. tell() returns the
    file size rather than 0). This is consistent with the behaviour of the
    traditional 2.x file object.

  Add missing Py_CHARMASK when calling isspace().

........
  r67843 | kristjan.jonsson | 2008-12-18 18:15:54 +0100 (Thu, 18 Dec 2008) | 5 lines

  Fix an issue in the tokenizer, where a file is opened by fd, but the underlying PyFileIO object wasn created with the closefd attribute true.
  Also fix error handling for close() int _fileio.c . It was incorrect, looking for a negative refcount, and so errors weren't raised. This is why this issue wasn't caught.
  There is a second reason why it isn't seen: Class IOBase in io.py has a try:/except: around the close() funtion in the __del__() method. This also masks these error conditions.

  This issue was discovered by removing the _set_invalid_parameter_handler() fiddling, thus enabling the C runtime checks on windows.

ecc42a2b82 Fixed issue #4233.
Changed semantic of _fileio.FileIO's close() method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The FileIO object also got a new readonly attribute closefd.

  Fix:
   * crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc
   * memory leaks found with valgrind
   * compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads
   * problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker

  Update the valgrind suppressions file with new leaks that are small/one-time
  leaks we don't care about (ie, they are too hard to fix).

  TBR=barry
  TESTED=./python -E -tt ./Lib/test/regrtest.py -uall (both debug and opt modes)
    in opt mode:
    valgrind -q --leak-check=yes --suppressions=Misc/valgrind-python.supp \
      ./python -E -tt ./Lib/test/regrtest.py -uall,-bsddb,-compiler \
                          -x test_logging test_ssl test_multiprocessing
    valgrind -q --leak-check=yes --suppressions=Misc/valgrind-python.supp \

      LD_PRELOAD=~/local/lib/libfailmalloc.so FAILMALLOC_INTERVAL=$i \
          ./python -c pass
    done

  At least some of these fixes should probably be backported to 2.5.

  Add Tools/scripts/patchcheck.py. Invoked from ``make check``, the script does
  some verification:

  - Runs reindent.py on all .py files.
  - Checks if any changes in Doc exist.
  - Whether Misc/ACKS was changed.
  - Whether Misc/NEWS was changed.

  The hope is that ``make check`` can become a command anybody can run to get
  reminders about what all the requisite steps needed to create a proper
  patch/checkin.

1ff9910f59 Issue1395: Universal mode used to duplicate newlines when using read(1).
"Universal newline" is now an incremental decoder wrapping the initial one,
with its own additional buffer (if '\r' is seen at the end of the input).

A decoder allows the tell() funtion to record the state of the translation.
This also simplifies the readline() process.

Now test_netrc passes on Windows, as well as many new tests in test_io.py

98297ee781 Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch.
No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137
branch.  The most obvious changes:

  - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level);
  - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level);
  - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible.

I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type.

The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more
bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list.
