25dded041f Make the various iterators' "setstate" sliently and consistently clip the
index.  This avoids the possibility of setting an iterator to an invalid
state.

2c40f640d9 Issue #18408: Fix list_ass_slice(), handle list_resize() failure
I tested the patch manually by injecting a fault using gdb: list items are
correctly restored on failure.
