46e8243ed0 Remove support for deriving version information from directory name; 
instead, in prepare_distrib and VERSION.INFO, allow an additional
version indication to be specified on the command line. This additional
information will be included in configure.ac at packaging time.

e9205e794b More fixes for packaging from an existing checkout: 
always take a copy of the checkout into a temporary directory so as
to never clobber the existing tree.
